 Né à Milan, Nino Rota y fit représenter son premier oratorio à l'âge de 12 ans ! Il étudia ensuite à Rome avec Alfredo Casella, puis aux Etats-Unis où il découvrit à la fois le grand cinéma et l'exemple d'une production populaire, profuse mais savante, à la Gershwin (là-bas, autour des comédies musicales de Broadway). Lui, entre quatre symphonies, une dizaine d'opéras et autant de concertos, cinq ballets et beaucoup de musique de chambre, il trouva sa veine précisément dans la musique de films (il en aurait 170 à son actif) : du Guépard au Parrain, en passant naturellement par son grand partenaire Fellini. Enormes succès de ce qu'on a pu appeler, fort justement, une ''petite musique à la lancinante nostalgie''. Pour le présent enregistrement, on est ailleurs, dans des compositions se voulant plus sérieuses, plus traditionnellement classiques, celles finalement de ce directeur de conservatoire que fut également Rota. A commencer par ce malicieux oxymore didactique : des pièces à la fois difficiles et pour enfants (ou jeunes élèves). Les préludes, eux, en réfèrent évidemment à cette filiation allant de Chopin à Debussy. Autre morceau de choix, ces variations (à la Busoni) finissant par une fugue (à la Liszt) sur la fameuse signature solfégique du nom de Bach en notation allemande (si bémol, la, do, si). Et cette fantaisie en sol (il en écrivit ensuite une autre, en do), dédiée à Michelangeli qui ne la joua jamais, et dont on retrouva le manuscrit après la mort du compositeur. Elle dit bien aux mélomanes curieux qu'entre Nino et Rota, ce pouvait être du sérieux, voire un peu de l'austère, mais sans rien vraiment de révolutionnaire. (Gilles-Daniel Percet) Nino Rota’s relationship with the piano was extraordinary. His maternal grandfather, Giovanni Rinaldi, was a well-known composer who wrote primarily for this instrument. In his mother’s »Storia di Nino« (Nino’s Story) we read as follows: »At the age of eight Nino was improvising on the piano and producing harmonies so naturally that it was as if the keys were doing it for him on their own. When his father saw how I listened with open mouth, he asked me in a skeptical way, ‘Do you think he really has talent, or are we only fooling ourselves, as parents do?’« No, Nino’s parents were not mistaken; their son was a child prodigy. Considering Nino Rota’s close relationship with the piano, it is all the more astonishing that his oeuvre for this instrument is not all that extensive: a total of fourteen opus numbers with piano music, including works from his youth. His piano compositions of larger scope attest to Bach’s role as an important point of orientation for him. In 1950 he wrote the Variations and Fugue in Twelve Tones on the Name of Bach, a work with a magnificent fugue consisting of a most highly chromatic structure posing a genuine challenge to the pianist and in every way equal to Max Reger’s complex works. The most ambitious work composed by Rota for solo piano is formed by the 15 Preludi. Here too motifs in chromatic ascent and descent already pervade the very first four preludes.
