Malipiero Quatuors à Cordes N 2 3 6 Monteverdi Messe à 4 Voix Trans Pour Quatuor à

Dans la prolifique production du compositeur Gian Francesco Malipiero subsistent huit quatuors. Ils constituent un cycle homogène et de haute valeur et « c’est le meilleur Malipiero qui s’exprime ici » (Harry Halbreicht). Le second quatuor Stornelli e ballate est constitué comme le premier de très brefs épisodes au nombre de quatorze à partir d’un motif du violon qui revient de façon récurrente. Cultivant l’art de l’anacrouse, le compositeur délaisse la forme sonate pour créer pour chaque séquence un mode de composition et un climat particulier. Conçu comme un madrigal, le Troisième Quatuor "Cantari alla Madrigalesca" est le fruit d’un jeu de sonorités entre instruments qui chantent (dixit Malipiero). L’abandon de toute thématique pour un hédonisme sonore est encore à l’œuvre dans son Sixième quatuor "Arca di Noé", grande arche en trois parties séparées par des silences. Dans sa demeure le compositeur aimait s’entourer d’animaux divers même si ceux-ci n’interfèrent pas littéralement dans l’œuvre. Le Quartetto Sincronie a eu la judicieuse idée de compléter son programme avec une transcription pour quatuor de la "Messe à quatre voix "de Monteverdi (1650) (Malipiero participa durant la guerre à l’édition de l’œuvre de ce dernier). Il s’agit là plus d’exalter le contrepoint par l’usage des timbres du quatuor que de véritable synchronicité d’esprit avec le compositeur vénitien. (Jérôme Angouillant)

In the dark years of the Nazi-Fascist period, when the light of the end was still far off, Malipiero completed a long-awaited undertaking: an edition of the complete works of Claudio Monteverdi. Its last volume, the sixteenth, came out in 1942 at the height of the war. The edition contained the sacred production that the publisher Vincenti had assembled in the collection Messa a 4 voci et salmi (1650). Quartetto Sincronie’s choice to include an arrangement of Monteverdi’s Mass, alternating the parts with Malipiero’s work, is yet another example of reinvention-creation that Malipiero would likely have appreciated. In the composers’ poetics, instruments are asked to sing as voices, and so the opposite—voices translated to instruments—is fitting. Philological rigor was, after all, foreign to Malipiero’s worldview. Instead, the composer spoke of his relationship with Monteverdi as a kind of psychic channeling: finding synchronicity within the synchrony of listening, which dissolves the distance of centuries. The Mass for Four Voices is thus split into parts throughout the record, but it remains possible to orient oneself. The cohesion is melodic: there’s a descending tetrachord G-F-E-D at the beginning of the Kyrie that returns in various guises (inverted, diminished, augmented), articulating the contrapuntal fabric of the different movements. The listener can thus follow this pathway, from the Gloria to the Agnus Dei, in a zigzag that turns Monteverdi the sacred “refrain” to Malipiero’s profane cycle of quartets.
