Au Southbank Centre’s le 8 avril 2017, jauge du Festival Hall oblige, Vladimir Jurowski était loin de réunir les fameux mille, ce qui d’ailleurs ne se produit quasi jamais. L’effet de masse, même dans le Veni Creator, n’est ni son souci ni son objet. Partout il veut des lignes saillantes, des polyphonies claires, élevant la cathédrale (et quelle rosace dans la coda de la première partie, c’est un cosmos de planètes sonores), et narrant le récit errant de la Scène Finale du Second Faust avec des subitistes de conduction, des irisations de timbres, une poésie mystérieuse plus entendue depuis Sinopoli. Bémol, les solistes. Pas les plus belles voix du moment, même Barry Banks n’est pas dans un de ses meilleurs jours, mais tout de même, la Pénitente d’Anne Schwanewilms avait son timbre si singulier, la Marie d’Egypte de Patricia Bardon, où passe le souvenir de celle de Fassbaender, le Pater Profundus de Matthew Rose s’écouteront avec admiration. L’intérêt du concert est ailleurs, dans le sens inné du tactus mahlérien possédé par Vladimir Jurowski, vertu essentielle qui nous avait valu voici peu une des plus attachantes Quatrième Symphonie de la discographie récente. This release marks the end of Vladimir Jurowski’s ground- breaking 14-year tenure as Principal Conductor of the LPO, and is the 35th release on the LPO label conducted by Jurowski. Symphony No. 8 becomes Jurowski’s fourth Mahler release on the label, joining highly praised recordings of Symphony No. 1 (LPO0070, ‘Everything about the dewy dawn of this Mahler One is perfect’ BBC Music Magazine), Symphony No. 2 (LPO0054, ‘As engaging as it gets’ BBC Music Magazine, Gramophone Choice), and Symphony No. 4 (LPO0113, ‘as insightful and as individual as we have come to expect from the source.’ Gramophone Choice). This live performance is taken from one of the LPO’s most acclaimed concerts of recent years. The Guardian gave the concert 5 stars and described the performance as ‘daring’ and ‘outstanding’ and particularly noted that ‘most impressive, and amid so much sonic enormity, was Jurowski’s constant care and control over dynamics, phrasing, balance and architecture’. This recording brings together more than 400 performers, including 4 choirs and 8 star soloists – among them Sofia Fomina, Matthew Rose and Anne Schwanewilms. The choirs and soloists were spaced across the full Royal Festival Hall stage to create an immersive soundscape, which has been recreated in the recording.
