La belle maison Urania abandonne enfin ses sinistres pochettes noires mais la politique éditoriale reste la même : proposer les œuvres les plus classiques, par leurs plus grands interprètes, dans des prises live relativement rares et une restauration sonore correcte. Ici c’est un Messie qui nous arrive, datant de 1963, et en allemand, comme il était courant à l’époque. A la baguette Karl Richter. Aucune influence baroqueuse ici, la génération Harnoncourt Leonardt commence à peine à imposer les relectures qui font autorité aujourd’hui. Départissons nous de nos nouvelles habitudes de mélomanes pour apprécier ce qui rayonne ici et qui est au fond l’essentiel : la foi, soutenue par un quatuor de luxe comme les baroqueux n’en bénéficieront jamais : je ne peux pas être objectif en parlant de Janowitz qui fait partie de mon panthéon personnel. Certains pointeront les aigus tubés, l’uniformité des couleurs, qu’importe : dans la joie de la nativité, ce chant séraphique est idéal. Haefliger est au même niveau d’accomplissement vocal et spirituel. Marga Hoeffgen déploie le somptueux velours de son mezzo, et Franz Crass dosant ses fabuleux moyens est la délicatesse même. Besided the original version of The Messiah, originally written in english, at those times the text was translated also into german with great success. This tradition flow into the romantic and german executive practise, and Haendel music was therefore played as that of Bruckner. Only after 1945, it started to be considered as an Oratorio typical of the tradition of the 18th Century, to which belong also Bach and Scarlatti. At the beginning of the Sixties, one of the pioneers of the modern philology, Karl Richter, finally recorded, in german, the first modern discographic edition of Der Messias : it is this wonderful recording we publish in 2 CD (usually it is in 3) in an extraordinary stereo edition and with a stellar cast. An edition hard to find for years is available again.
