Psaume pour voix de baryton, chœur et orchestre, le "Beatus Vir" op. 38 du polonais Henryk Nikolaj Gorecki fut créé lors de la visite de Jean Paul II à Cracovie en 1979 sous la direction du compositeur. Référant à une tradition liturgique séculaire (Psalmodies), l’œuvre d’une harmonie sobre, distille par sa progression dramatique une émotion constante. Aux premières mesures entonnées par un chanteur d’une émouvante fébrilité, soutenues par le grondement des cuivres, succède un long crescendo rythmé par le martèlement du choeur et les bourrasques orchestrales. Dédié au flûtiste Carol Wincenk, le "Concerto-Cantata" (1992) est une pièce en quatre mouvements distincts où le compositeur joue habilement entre inspiration profane et sacrée : le Récitativo (Le jeu du soliste semble soumis au mouvement perpétuel), un Arioso de nature méditative, un Concertino ludique et grotesque et un très bref Arioso e Corale qui conclut la pièce dans un relative sérénité. Quant au Canticum Graduum (1969) où l’on retrouve les textures de timbres si singulières du premier mouvement de la Deuxième Symphonie "Copernican", c’est une forme en gestation lente (Strauss, Penderecki) où le motif englobant n’évolue que grâce à une tension harmonique soutenue. The album features music of Henryk Mikolaj Górecki (1933–2010), one of the most interesting Polish composers of the post-war period. The artist was particularly inspired by religious music, which is often present in his works, both in direct references to biblical texts and in the textural and expressive layer. One of his more famous and significant compositions is the Beatus vir, Op. 38 for baritone, mixed choir and orchestra, composed on the occasion of the visit of Pope John Paul II to Poland in 1979. The author used five selected psalms as the basis for his musical setting. The work is monumental and full of symbolic references to both historical events and contemporary times. However, the 1992 piece entitled Concerto-Cantata, Op. 65 for orchestra and alto flute is completely different. It is a four-movement composition; its movements contrast with each other in terms of tempo and expression – meditative episodes, in which the velvety, dark sound of the alto flute adds depth, are juxtaposed with spontaneous, even wild fragments. In turn, the 1969 Canticum graduum, Op. 27 for orchestra is a homogeneous piece in terms of sound, based on the concept of long-lasting chordal blocks. The title of the composition and the atmosphere of the work, full of concentration, refer to religious music, beloved by the composer. The performers include: Szymon Mechlinski (baritone), Lukasz Dlugosz (flute), Choir and Orchestra of the Silesian Philharmonic conducted by Miroslaw Jacek Blaszczyk (Beatus vir) and Yaroslav Shemet.
