 Le violon est né vers 1520 en Italie, quelque part entre Brescia et Crémone. Et de la Renaissance, avec Giacomelli, Fontana, puis de Monteverdi jusqu'à Paganini, les Italiens en sont restés les virtuoses incontestés. Francesco Geminiani (Lucca, Toscane, 1687- Dublin, Irlande, 1762) appartient à cette génération de musiciens italiens qui ont été trouver gloire et fortune hors de leur patrie. Il a d'abord appris son métier auprès d’Alessandro Scarlatti, puis d’Arcangelo Corelli. En 1711, il est à la fois premier violon et directeur de l'opéra de Naples. Mais en 1714, il se rend à Londres, où l'a précédé sa réputation de virtuose du violon. En 1715, il y interprète ses concertos pour violon avec Haendel l'accompagnant au clavecin : Excusez du peu. Après quelques séjours à Paris, il se fixe dans les îles britanniques, et décède en Irlande, nous laissant, en plus de quelque 80 opus (sonates, concertos, pour violon ou pour clavecin), un traité « L'art de jouer le violon » qui fonde les principes de la technique moderne. Ses sonates pour violon en quatre mouvements, provocatrices, exigent de l'interprète un sens dramatique très sûr. Peu de ses contemporains osèrent les jouer en public. Igor Ruhadzé, familier du répertoire de violon baroque (Locatelli, Biber, Leclair...) a brillamment relevé le défi. Et jamais la virtuosité nécessaire n'éclipse le plaisir d'écoute de ces 12 sonates opus 1 qui, par leur mélodies agréables et variées, toujours empreintes de grâce, d'élégance et d'insouciance, dans la tradition d'un Vivaldi, annoncent le style galant qui sera plus tard illustré, entre autres, par les fils Bach. La claveciniste Alexandra Nepomnyaschchaya, dans le rôle un peu ingrat de continuiste, occupe fort dignement la place de Haendel. Un double CD d'écoute fort agréable. (Marc Galand) Igor Ruhadze’s Brilliant Classics recording of sonatas by Locatelli (94736) won warm praise from Gramophone. ‘The playing is elegantly supple, the string tone warm, and the architecture of individual movements thoughtfully worked out. All this makes for a pleasant mood and enjoyable listening. The more exuberant pieces are brilliantly and at times breathtakingly performed.’ Fanfare extended an equally enthusiastic welcome to Ruhadze’s album of concertos by Jean-Marie Leclair (95290): ‘The playing… is really top-notch… the group’s robust sound belies its small numbers… it’s hard to argue with playing as good as this.’ With his latest Brilliant Classics album, the Russian Baroque-specialist violinist and director turns to another pivotal figure in Baroque-era violin culture, Francesco Geminiani. Taught first by his violinist father and then by both Corelli and Alessandro Scarlatti in Rome, Geminiani was already a leading figure in north Italian courts in his 20s, before he undertook the move to London that made his name and fortune. Geminiani dedicated the Op.1 Sonatas (1716) to Baron Johann Adolf Kielmansegge, his first London patron. According to Hawkins, Kielmansegge favoured the composer by arranging a performance before the king in which Geminiani was accompanied on the harpsichord by Handel. With these sonatas, which clearly stem from Corelli, Geminiani presented himself to the public as Corelli's pupil. Many imitation editions followed the first printing, but the commentator Charles Burney maintained that only the composer himself could do them full justice. Apparently designed as a calling card for Geminiani’s talents as a violinist-composer, the Op.1 Sonatas still make strenuous technical but also expressive demands on any interpreter. Their genteel surface and polished dialogue between parts conceals an array of sophisticated contrasts between moods and demonstration of a violinist’s credentials as an artist as well as a technician. For this new recording, Igor Ruhadze is joined not by his colleagues in the Violini Capricciosi ensemble but the Russian-born harpsichordist Alexandra Nepomnyashchaya. Having pursued graduate studies with early-music luminaries such as Richard Egarr and Menno van Delft, she too evinces intense sympathy with Geminiani’s idiom.
