Admiré par Brahms pour son quintette avec piano op. 1, Ernö Dohnanyi a seulement 18 ans en 1895. En 1899, moins de 2 ans près la mort de Brahms, il compose la sonate pour violoncelle et piano op. 8 en hommage au maître de Hambourg. Et c’est tout l’esprit de Brahms qui s’y trouve. L’allegro initial dans le dialogue entre les deux instruments évoque le quintette avec piano. L’adagio, d’une grande profondeur, montre combien il est temps de redécouvrir la force de l’œuvre de Dohnanyi. Le Konzertstück op. 12, d’abord composé pour violoncelle et orchestre a été arrangé par l’auteur pour violoncelle et piano en 1906. Il est d’un lyrisme débordant. Les cinq mouvements de cette œuvre s’enchaînent sans interruption pour ne faire qu’une suite lyrique d’un seul tenant. Lucio Labella Danzi au violoncelle et Marco Rapetti au piano ne relâchent jamais la tension et font de l’adagio de ce konzertstück, un moment d’une intensité saisissante. Leur façon d’amener le final est d’une finesse époustouflante. Le recueil Ruralia Hungarica est constitué de diverses pièces inspirées du folklore hongrois pour piano, pour piano et orchestre, pour piano et violon, et celle présentée ici, composée pour violoncelle et piano. Là encore une mélodie d’un romantisme brahmsien transpire à chaque note. L’enregistrement bénéficie d’un bel équilibre dans la prise de son. (Dominique Gérard)

“I could not have written it better myself!”, remarked an astonished Brahms on hearing the 18-year-old Erno Dohnányi’s Opus One (the First Piano Quintet) in the summer of 1895. Often hypercritical and disparaging of other composers, Brahms was so impressed by Dohnányi that he promoted his music in Vienna. Just two years later the elder composer passed away, but he might have remarked similarly about Dohnány’s Cello Sonata in B flat of 1899. This magnificent composition sounds undeniably like an affectionate homage to him. In 1902, Dohnányi performed the Cello Sonata in Frankfurt with Hugo Becker, one of the most famous cellists and pedagogues of his time, and a few years later Becker would be the dedicatee of Dohnányi’s Konzertstu¨ck in D Op.12 for cello and orchestra, which the composer also arranged for cello and piano. Dohnányi and his friend Béla Barto´k, three years his junior, always admired each other, though they could not have differed more in terms of style and character, their diametrically opposed approaches particularly apparent in their use of Hungarian folksongs. By contrast to Barto´k’s innovative ethnomusicological perspective, Dohnányi continued presenting gypsy melodies in the Romantic fashion of Liszt and Brahms, as evidenced in his Ruralia Hungarica Op.32, a cycle of seven pieces scored for various forces, one of them (Op.32d) being for cello and piano.
