 Le nom d’Emilie Mayer a fini par ressurgir dans la discographie récente. Le label CPO avait déjà fait paraître ses deux premières symphonies, deux quatuors avec piano ainsi qu’un magnifique quatuor à cordes (joint à un quatuor de Fanny Mendelssohn). Deux autre symphonies sont ici présentées. La première, qui porte le numéro 3, surnommée "Symphonie militaire", est vive et d’excellente facture. Comme souvent chez Mayer, les rythmes sont très travaillés, le savant jeu des tonalités est parfaitement maîtrisé. La compositrice n’avait d’ailleurs rien laissé au hasard pour la première de cette symphonie : orchestre de premier plan, chef en vue, salle de qualité, invitations envoyées à tous ceux qui importaient dans le monde musical – et le succès fut au rendez-vous. C’est cependant la Septième symphonie qui domine ce disque. Œuvre de maturité, d’une grande richesse mélodique et harmonique, elle allie une grande maîtrise dans la composition et le contrepoint à une sensibilité et une originalité dans le traitement des variations tonales. Si elle rappelle certaines des grandes pages symphoniques de Mendelssohn, elle garde une personnalité bien à elle, qui en font assurément une grande oeuvre. On our second symphony CD, Emilie Mayer opens up a new facet of her compositional spectrum by exhibiting classicistic tendencies: clear and transparent outlines, regular periods in the formation of themes, no formal experiments. The additional name "Militair" refers to the use of piccolo, triangle, cymbals and bass drum in the final movement. All we know about her seventh symphony is that it was probably composed by 1856: it is fair to say that Emilie Mayer draws in this symphony the sum of her previous experience with the composition of symphonies: large-scale tension-building, such as she practiced in the opening movement of her second symphony, with the classicistically clear formal language that her third symphony exhibits. At the same time, the motivic integration is so dense that the boundaries between thematic and non-thematic formal sections become blurred. More masterpieces by one of the most important female representatives of 19th century Central European music.
