Biagio Pesciolini est né dans la ville de Prato en 1535. Il obtient le poste de maître de chapelle de la cathédrale de Volterra (Toscane) en 1563 et publie la même année son premier livre de Madrigaux à six voix. Deux autres livres suivront (1571 et 1581) au même rythme que la succession des divers postes qu'il va occuper. Il terminera sa carrière de musicien dans sa ville natale et tant que Maestro di cappella. Il meurt en 1611. On a dans cet album un échantillon représentatif du style polychoral du compositeur, variant les effectifs de 5, 6, 8 et 10 voix. Les sections contrapuntiques alternant avec des parties homophoniques. On note aussi une savante utilisation du figuralisme dans la plupart des chants, le texte fusionnant de façon remarquable avec l'expression musicale. La Messe Parodie "Decantabat" est quand à elle calquée sur le motet "Decantabat populus", inclus dans le premier recueil à dix voix. Une très belle collection chorale illustrée avec une grande maitrise par les Tuscae Voces et l'instrumentarium profus (Cornets, trombones, viole de gambe, violon, alto, flûte, théorbe et orgue) de la Pifarescha. This recording project – the culmination of a research work that started out in 2020 – follows the released record of the third book of madrigals (Tactus, tc 531601, 2021) by the same author, which was the result of the first collaboration between conductor Elia Orlando, ensemble Tuscae Voces – that he conducts – and record label Tactus. It is safe to say that the outcomes confirm how the musical landscape in Renaissance Prato deserves way more attention than it has drawn so far, and that Biagio Pesciolini – besides being closely connected to the Florentine court – was an author whose vision went beyond the city walls of Prato. Although praised by peers Ludovico Zacconi and Antonio Brunelli for his mastery of those techniques that belong to Flemish-origin ars musica, he skilfully took on both “orthogonal” writing for double choir and winding compositions for five and six voices, which proves that Biagio Pesciolini was indeed open and receptive to the different tendencies of Italy’s most important musical centres.
