 Le nom du compositeur Aram Khachaturian (1903 – 1978) est associé aux ballets Ganayeh (la célèbrissime Danse du sabre), Spartacus et à ses concertos pour piano (créé par Sviatoslav Richter) et violon (dédié à David Oistrakh). Chantre inconditionnel de son pays l’Arménie, il composa trois symphonies en son honneur. La première symphonie est en grande partie inspirée de chants traditionnels arméniens. La troisième (Symphonie-poème) est marquée par un nationalisme souvent grandiloquent. La seconde dite « des cloches » qui fait l’objet de cette parution CPO, est une œuvre de guerre. Composée en 1943, en réaction à l’invasion de l’armée allemande (à l’instar de la symphonie « Léningrad » de Chostakovitch), elle se distingue par l’utilisation de cloches, destinée à exprimer le tocsin dès les premières mesures. Ensuite le climat reste sombre, lancinant : une « danse macabre » dans le Scherzo et un Andante aux allures de marche funèbre intègre un Dies Irae et un chant populaire. Les climats apaisés sont trompeurs et semblent être plutôt des menaces rampantes. Le final est martial, cuivré (fanfare) et les cloches résonnent à nouveau dans une péroraison triomphale. Version acérée de Frank Beermann, dans l’urgence, grâce à un orchestre particulièrement réactif. En complément trois airs de concert sur des textes de poètes arméniens, ici agréablement chantés par la voix juvénile de Julia Bauer, révèle un Khachaturian plus élégiaque et moins tourmenté. (Jérôme Angouillant) This month we are launching our new Khachaturian edition featuring his complete symphonies. Vol. 1 focuses on his magnificently dimensioned Symphony No. 2, which functions as a heroic, Soviet "War Symphony". Unlike his other two symphonies, this one has a classical structure in four movements and a language that is easy to understand and almost programmatic and didactic. Even though the work first and foremost is distinguished by pathos, it nevertheless displays a master’s hand in its rhythmic and tonal design. The symphony owes its popular name, the "Bell Symphony", to the forceful, dissonant opening measures recurring in some passages of the first movement and at the end of the last movement. The symphony is presented in combination with the three Concert Arias of 1946. The soprano Julia Bauer interprets a highly poetic declaration of love, a tragic legend, and in the third song ("O don’t fly away, you songs!") music itself is the theme. The vocal rendering of the songs, fleeting and transitory, nevertheless makes a lasting impression.
