Alla turca Romberg Symphonie n 4 Mozart Concerto pour violon n 5 Schröder Griffiths

Quel joli et intelligent programme ! On sait que la fin du XVIII° siècle fut particulièrement friande d’exotisme et de turqueries. C’est autour de ce thème que l’excellent musicien qu’est Howard Griffiths a composé ce programme passionnant : on y retrouve avec bonheur deux pages célèbres, l’ouverture de L’"incontro improvviso" de Haydn, et surtout le 5° concerto pour violon de Mozart, défendu avec beaucoup d’élégance par Julia Schröder. Mais le plus savoureux réside à l’évidence dans la 4° des dix symphonies d’Andreas Romberg, compositeur estimé en son temps, qui joua en quatuor avec son cousin Bernhard, Ferdiand Ries et… Beethoven. Sa symphonie "Alla Turca" (1798) s’inscrit avec gaieté dans cette lignée de turqueries, non sans parenté bien sûr avec la symphonie militaire de Haydn. Aucun guide ne serait meilleur aujourd’hui qu’Howard Griffith, interprète érudit et inspiré des symphonies du premier romantisme, de Ries à Spohr (à qui Romberg succéda en 1815 à la cour de Gotha). Superbe et réjouissant album, dont on espère qu’il prélude à d’autres découvertes de Romberg et ses contemporains. (Richard Wander)

Andreas Romberg explored new musical territory when he got the idea to include Turkish color in his fourth symphony. It was not until the romantic era that Oriental or Arabian color very deliberately was incorporated into symphonic music, whether in Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade (1888) or in Engelbert Humperdinck’s Maurische Rhapsodie (1898). Right in the first movement of his symphony Romberg used the title »A la turca« to get his audience to anticipate Turkish color. The gradually intensified initial part goes over into a passage with the expected percussion accents and swiftly whirling violin figures. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Violin Concerto in A major, the last of his five violin concertos, is also regarded as a concert piece with Turkish color. In the rondo finale there is a famous interlude in A minor in which the violoncellists and double bassists beat the rhythm on the strings with their bow sticks. This too produces the popular »Alla turca« flair. Our soloist is the young Swiss musician Julia Schröder, and it is not least in the swift main part of the Haydn overture that things sound »Turkish«; here not only the timpani but also the bass drum and cymbals accentuate the rhythm.
