En cette année 2018, le monde mélomane n’a heureusement pas oublié le centenaire de Birgit Nilsson. D’ailleurs, comment l’aurait-il pu ? Parmi les publications en hommage à la cantatrice, le document publié par Unitel trouve parfaitement sa place. Certes, le propos n’est pas de nous offrir un florilège d’airs interprétés par la soprano suédoise, ce que l’édition discographique plus ou moins récente permet à l’envi, mais de pointer les éléments biographiques essentiels témoignant de ce parcours hors pair. Cela est d’autant plus opportun que les livres par ou sur Birgit Nilsson n’ont hélas pas connu de parution en français. En une heure et demie, le film de Thomas Voigt et Wolfgang Wunderlich nous emmène à Stockholm, Bayreuth, Vienne, New York, etc., et revient sur les interprétations les plus marquantes : Isolde, Brunhilde, Turandot, Salomé, Elektra… Mais son originalité est encore ailleurs. Fourmillant de détails et d’anecdotes le plus souvent rapportés par l’intéressée elle-même (documents d’archive), il retrace les moments les plus significatifs rencontrés à la scène ou à la ville. Si tous ne furent pas heureux, l’intégrité, la spontanéité et l’humour de l’artiste montrent comment ils ont été vécus. A ces témoignages de première main, viennent s’ajouter ceux d’artistes qui ont été proches de Birgit Nilsson comme Placido Domingo ou qui, via la Fondation, se situent dans sa postérité, comme Nina Stemme. Un témoignage essentiel sur une personnalité qu’il faut bien qualifier de géniale. (Alain Monnier)

An intimate portrait of Birgit Nilsson (1918–2005) on the occasion of her centennial on 17th May 2018: The Swedish soprano had an incredible technique and was the world’s leading dramatic soprano between 1955 and 1975. Rare TV and archive footage shows Nilsson at work, and is complemented by interviews with Plácido Domingo, Otto Schenk, James Levine, Nina Stemme, Jonas Kaufmann, Marilyn Horne, Christa Ludwig and many others. The film reveals a sensitive woman behind the honest, down to earth, quick-witted artist, who had “a voice like fire and ice” (Antonio Pappano). The documentary was shot at the farm in Bastad/Sweden, where Nilsson grew up and spent the summers until the end of her life, at the Royal Opera in Stockholm, where the legendary Wagnerian singer made her operatic debut in 1946, and in places like the Bayreuth Festival, the Wiener Staatsoper andthe Metropolitan Opera in New York, where Nilsson was the star and box office draw.
