L'Astrée

Turin ne passe pas pour être une des capitales italiennes de l'opéra. Pourtant, tout change avec l'ouverture du Teatro Regio en 1740. Les voyageurs étrangers se pressent avec les habitants de la capitale du Royaume de Savoie pour entendre les œuvres des grands compositeurs à la mode. C'est ce riche répertoire que nous donne à entendre l'ensemble L'Astrée avec des airs de compositeurs toujours célèbres, comme Paisiello, Galuppi, Piccini, et d'autres un peu oubliés, comme Felice Alessandri, Giuseppe Scolari, Gioacchino Cocchi, Giovanni Battista Borghi...L'album se conclut par des des airs français de Monsigny et de Grétry, ce qui nous rappelle qu'autrefois le français fut une importante langue de culture. Ce qu'il ne doit plus être, puisque l'éditeur du livret néglige de s'adresser au public francophone. L'extrême élégance du chant de la soprano Stéphanie Varnerin mérite une mention particulière. Son timbre, sa sensibilité dramatique sans pathos excessif, son agilité vocale jamais gratuite mettent pleinement en valeur ces airs un peu oubliés. Et nous offrent un album plein de charme. Whether it be buffa, giocosa, semi-seria or seria – without a quantum of love's troubles, baroque and classical opera would be in poor shape. Arias of desperation, heart-wrenching entreaties, scenes of jealousy and webs of intrigue are all part of the iron-clad stock of effective staged works – whatever class of society the protagonists belonged to. The noble emperor, who ultimately grants a pardon to the evildoers, was just as little immune to emotional humiliation as the bubbly and flirtatious Colombinchen, who in the end refreshingly thumbs her nose at her unfaithful lover, while the audience gleefully slap their thighs. Soprano Stéphanie Varnerin, accompanied by the excellent instrumental ensemble L’Astrée, is the soloist in this new production dedicated to a colourful anthology of Turin's opera scene in the 18th century. Fourteen arias by nine once successful composers, whose works were performed or premiered at one of the two famous theatres in Turin (Regio and Carignano) are included in the program, where only one emotion is absent – boredom.
