Praetorius Schütz Œuvres Sacrées Weser-renaissance Cordes - Cpo555503 - Cpo

Ce quatrième volume de la série "Musik aus schloss Wolfenblütten" enregistré par le Weser-Renaissance toujours dirigé par l'indéfectible Manfred Cordes est consacré à deux pointures de la musique d'Allemagne du Nord du dix-septième siècle : Praetorius et Schütz. Tous deux ont des connexions avec la cour de Dresde et celle de ce fameux Wolfenbüttel Schloss qui était un haut lieu culturel où gravitèrent nombres de musiciens de l'époque. Si Praetorius n'a jamais mis les pieds en Italie, son cadet Schütz a séjourné à Venise. Composés à a cour de Dresde pour l'électeur de Saxe. Basés sur les Psaumes, leurs compositions s'inspirent de ce modèle d''écriture pour double chœur avec accompagnement de cuivres. Le groupe instrumental, presque un orchestre (!), est ici parfois profus et redondant (Ps 6) tandis que les échanges et les oppositions entre les chœurs traduisent avec justesse le sens des textes. L'effectif choral est variable. Le Psaume "Das ist mir Lieb" (Ps116) a cappella est ainsi nimbé d'une luminosité de vitrail. Le même repris par Praetorius offre un très beau dialogue tout en introversion entre le timbre des instruments et les voix. Face à la tradition luthérienne représentée par Praetorius, le Psaume 130 à huit voix, ici admirablement restitué, atteste de la modernité de Schütz. Cordes et son Weser-Renaissance font définitivement figure de référence dans ce répertoire. (Jérôme Angouillant)

In our series "Music from Wolfenbüttel Castle," the sixth concert in the series featured and recorded parallel settings of sacred works by Michael Praetorius and Heinrich Schütz. One does not immediately think of counting the great Dresden composer Heinrich Schütz among the kapellmeisters at the Wolfenbüttel court, and yet he was officially engaged there as "Capellmeister von Haus aus" from 1655 until at least 1666. Michael Praetorius, however, had long since died around this time. By juxtaposing compositions with identical texts (so-called parallel settings) by Praetorius and Schütz, this CD makes it possible to compare the styles of these two "heroes of music history". This is particularly appealing inasmuch as the stylistic upheaval at the beginning of the 17th century, which originated in Italy, falls into the creative period of both composers, and it is revealing to observe in what way the new developments influenced the oeuvre of both masters. At the same time, the works of both composers with identical texts are not exactly numerous, which is related to the fact that Praetorius turned to the arrangement of Protestant church hymns to a particularly strong degree, a genre that either interested Schütz little, or that his position at the Dresden court did not offer any occasion to serve.
