Parmi les acteurs reconnus, avec l’estonien Arvo Pärt, de la renaissance de la musique chorale sacrée, Pawel Lukaszewski (1968- ) se fait si bien sa place qu’il s’attaque, sur ce double disque, à une œuvre-monument, "Joasz, King of Juda". Le compositeur polonais adapte la traduction de Popiel du texte du poète et librettiste Pietro Metastasio, "père du mélodrame italien" et très attaché à la valeur éducative du texte : il en modernise la syntaxe, élague l’intrigue pour n’en garder que les passages importants, restaure le rythme de certains passages récitatifs, enrichit le texte de plusieurs airs afin de mettre en avant les réactions émotionnelles des personnages – elles foisonnent dans cette histoire où, après la mort d’Achazia, roi de Juda, sa mère Athalie s’empare du trône et fait tuer tous les descendants royaux ; seul Joas échappe au massacre, caché par la sœur d’Achazia et élevé en secret, dans le temple et sous la garde de Jehojada, avant que, à ses sept ans, le peuple le proclame roi, ce qui entraîne le renversement (et la mort) d’Athalie. The album is a live recording of the concert premiere of the opera, and at the same time marks the phonographic debut of a work based on a libretto by the 18th-century poet and monk Pietro Metastasio. Azione sacra is a genre related to the oratorio, but the term emphasizes the dramatic component—this is not a static, contemplative piece, but rather a two-act mini-opera. The composer based his work partly on a Polish translation, while also drawing from the original Italian text. He refers to Joas as a sacra rappresentazione, making it the second work of this kind in his oeuvre. Musically, Lukaszewski remains true to his distinctive style, rooted in tonality and characterized by a varied texture—from intimate recitatives to dynamic choral passages. The work’s refined structure helps the listener follow the narrative, with clearly defined musical motifs assigned to individual characters and plotlines. The chorus, which comments on the action, plays an important role, as do the instrumental intermezzos. The recording features outstanding soloists whose voices blend seamlessly with the dramatic expression of the piece.
