Cette "Brockes Passion" de l’obscur Jacob Schuback vint s’inscrire dans la lignée des compositeurs ayant composé des Passions d’après le livret de Barthold Heinrich Brockes. Reinhard Keiser fut le premier en 1712 suivi de Telemann, Haendel (1716), Matheson (1718) et enfin Stolzel (1725). Le livret doit son succès auprès des musiciens grâce à sa fonctionnalité : expressivité des scènes, intelligibilité théologique. De quoi ravir les fidèles. Schuback est né en 1726 à Hambourg. Il s’oriente vers le droit et devient avocat tout en suivant assidûment des études musicales à la Johanneum Lateinschule où Telemann officie. Il se lie aussi d’amitié avec Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach avec qui il collabore pour la composition d’une cantate. On lui connaît à ce jour trois symphonies et plusieurs oratorios dont cette Passion. L’alternance des récitatifs et airs qui sont le cœur de l’œuvre nous montrent une savante maîtrise de la déclamation et un emploi opportun du figuralisme dans l’accompagnement orchestral. Les airs et ici les chanteurs caractérisent suffisamment chaque protagoniste et l’auditeur est vite captivé par l’intensité du drame. L’Arpa Festante dirigé ici par Franz-Peter Huber effectue par ailleurs un travail remarquable. Une très belle découverte dont il faudrait détailler chaque numéro. Avis aux mélomanes ! “Jesus, tortured and dying for the sins of the world”: This is how the Hamburg librettist and senator Barthold Heinrich Brockes (1680–1747) titled his dramatic adaptation of the Passion narrative—a text so popular that it was set to music nearly a dozen times in Hamburg alone. Composers included Reinhard Keiser, Johann Mattheson, George Frideric Handel, and Georg Philipp Telemann, among others. The jurist and diplomat Jacob Schuback (1726–1784) also composed his version of this so-called Brockes-Passion. And one must not assume that he, the son of a highly respected family, was merely a dilettante in the art of music. What Schuback created around the age of 30 during his musical “leisure hours” is, in the truest sense of the word, a gripping work. Choruses, recitatives, and arias follow one another with an almost operatic intensity, while characters imbued with vivid reality come to life with striking immediacy.
