Les dix dernières années de la carrière de Pachelbel, à l'église Saint-Sebald de Nuremberg, furent particulièrement fécondes et glorieuses. Entre autres œuvres, il n'y composa pas moins de treize Magnificat. Leur style, moins novateur que celui de ses œuvres pour orgue, les rapproche du type du motet. Ce sont deux de ces œuvres que nous présente cet album. On appréciera le son et la belle énergie de l'ensemble Himlische Cantorey, sous la direction de Jan Kobow, particulièrement dans le Magnificat en Si majeur, PWV 1514. Contrastant avec ces œuvres jubilatoires, deux concerts sacrés pour voix seule, de caractère plus sévère. L'un d'eux, pour soprano solo, est accompagné par un violon savamment désaccordé, selon la technique de la scordatura. Aussi virtuose et peut-être encore plus émouvant et pathétique, celui pour voix de basse seule. Un bel album, qui nous fait mieux connaître l'art de Pachelbel, qui n'a peut-être pas encore la réputation qu'il mérite. (Marc Galand)

In the last decade of his life, Johann Pachelbel (1653-1796) served as a church musician in his home city of Nuremberg. He was incredibly prolific, even by the standards of that time. The Magnificat, the song of praise of the Virgin Mary to the greatness of the Lord, who chose her to be the mother of the Saviour – he set this text from the Gospel of Luke alone almost a dozen times for the Protestant vesper worship service. He did so with awe-inspiring creativity and imagination and a feel for instrumental colours that still has an immediate effect today. As in the first volume of this series, we encounter a man whose life is full and robust and who in no way sees the world as a vale of tears. The Himlische Cantorey under its founder, director and tenor Jan Kobow does justice to its heavenly name.
