Myra Hess Joue Schubert Et Brahms Aranyi Salmond Cassado - Bid85061 - Biddulph - Classical

Jelly d’Aranyi, clop au bec, faisant mine de jouer du violon avec sa raquette de tennis guignée par une Myra Hess goguenarde, la photo est plutôt rare contrairement aux gravures Columbia que Ward Marston restitue avec art pour Biddulph. La chaleur enthousiaste, l’élan, la profusion harmonique qui enchantent leur Premier Trio de Schubert, nonobstant quelques traits brouillons et des effets d’archets de la belle Jelly un brin d’un autre âge pour nos oreilles d’aujourd’hui, n’ont pas dévalué le charme de ces sillons doublement historiques : d’abord parce que l’on ne joue plus Schubert ainsi, ensuite parce que le piano de Myra Hess, si ardant jusque dans l’élégance, y rayonne à plein. On la gouttera seule dans la petite Sonate en la majeur, phrasés à la fois délicats et diseurs, palette de nuance infinie, surtout chaque voix chante comme seule alors Artur Schnabel le faisait aussi en Schubert. Pour le Second Trio de Brahms, Jelly d’Aranyi prend le primus, d’ailleurs les cordes relèguent un peu le piano de la grande anglaise, ce qui rend la gravure plus incertaine. Il faut guetter le vaste archet qu’y déploie Gaspar Cassado, enregistré au fait de son art et dans toute la profondeur de sa grande caisse, pour se faire une juste idée de l’impact qu’i eut sur les scènes internationales durant l’entre-deux guerres. The London-born pianist Myra Hess was one of the most beloved musical artists in the English-speaking world, especially in Britain where she established the famed National Gallery concerts which brought much comfort and hope to a war-ridden nation. Although renowned as a solo artist, she was a magnificent chamber musician, as revealed in these CD of her performances in piano trios by Schubert and Brahms.The Hungarian violinist Jelly d’Arányi plays in both works and was a close friend of Hess. d’Arányi was a student of Jenö Hubay and was the great-niece of the legendary violinist Joseph Joachim. Her spectacular violin playing resulted in numerous works written for her, including Bartók’s two violin sonatas, Ravel’s Tzigane and Vaughan Williams’s Concerto Accademico. Hess and d’Arányi were renowned as a violin-piano duo, and in 1928 the Telegraph’s critic declared that there had been “no duo so fine since Ysaÿe and Busoni”.The Hess-d’Arányi duo are joined in the wonderful Schubert B-flat Trio by the English cellist Felix Salmond who was the first soloist to perform Elgar’s Cello Concerto. In the Brahms C-major Trio, the cello part is taken by the marvellous Spanish cellist Gaspar Cassadó who was one of Pablo Casals’s most renowned students.Also included in the CD is Myra Hess’s eloquent recording of the Schubert Piano Sonata in A, Op.120.
