Je ne lis jamais les notices avant une première écoute. Pendant celle-ci, j’avais noté « euphorie » et « sincérité ». Je les retrouve en ouvrant le livret, le premier sous la plume de la Süddeutsche Zeitung et le second transparaissant à chaque ligne du texte d’introduction, dû au pianiste. Quelle voix singulière, comme (comparaison n’est pas raison) un hybride de Perahia et de van Immerseel ! L’émerveillement qu’il dit avoir ressenti enfant devant ces 2 concertos (les 2 plus beaux de Mozart selon Olivier Messiaen, excusez du peu) s’entend de la première à la dernière note, en même temps que le souci de retrouver sur cet énorme bateau de Steinway l’esprit du pianoforte (quelles attaques !). Bien sûr cet enthousiasme se traduit par quelques débordements « pas tout à fait » textuels, mais je rends les armes : c’est toujours en situation, jamais au détriment de l’œuvre. Il y a bien longtemps que je n’avais plus eu ainsi la larme à l’œil, de jubilation au final du K.453 et d’affliction à l’adagio du K.488… L’orchestre n’y est pas pour rien, pas accompagnateur mais partenaire concertant vraiment avec un souci des détails très impressionnant (fruit d’un gros travail en amont avec Michael Waterman, avoue le pianiste). Seul petit reproche peut-être : une prise de son un peu grossissante. Bon, je ne suis pas dupe, la discographie regorge de merveilles que je connais… mais voilà un disque singulier, remarquable, une voix à surveiller. (Olivier Eterradossi)

"The story of Mozart is by now well-known. His oeuvre and life have become staples of modern culture, from the numerous books, films andbiographies to the hundreds of recordings of his work by history’s most acclaimed musicians. Yet one might say this canonization has paradoxicallyled to a narrowing of our enjoyment of Mozart.I’ve long been interested in using the modern piano to mimic the unique temperament of the fortepiano, to make the notes not only sing but speak likea human voice, accentuating not only the luxuriant vowel sounds of the modern piano but also the short, staccato consonants created by thefortepiano. Mozart is master of the lyrical, but there are even more layers of dimension to be revealed by adding the percussiveness of the fortepiano,sometimes taking the modern piano off its contemporary pedestal, and weaving the more transparent texture of its historical sibling with the orchestra.For this recording, I had the privilege of playing with members of one of the world’s most prestigious orchestras. Working with leader MichaelWaterman, our hope was for the orchestra to be fully integrated, to create a whole that’s greater than the sum of its parts, soloist included. Therecording was done without conductor, in a diplomatic approach more common to chamber ensembles than a 28-strong orchestra. We made musicaldecisions far in advance and in rehearsal set the balance so that the piano could suitably accompany the orchestra, rather than only the other wayaround. Removing its lid to open up the piano, the orchestra huddled around it so that I was face-to-face with the operatic winds, bringing them to theforefront, with easy access to all string players around me. In this configuration we were able to fully relish the accompanimental and oftenunder-prioritized middle register which so often forms the backbone of the music, contributing heavily to its character. Taken together, this attitude ofmusical camaraderie was instrumental in helping us create a distinctive sound and feeling for these much-loved works.“ (Ben Kim)
