Sacrificiel Alceste ? Les metteurs en scènes furent récemment peu inspirés par ce drame conjugal, même Olivier Py laissera disparaitre son drame dans le décor, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui ne fait pas mieux, qui l’habille de costumes moches, et substitue à une vraie direction d’acteur un geste chorégraphique fluide, plus élégant expressif. Tout cet esthétisme avive l’ennui, d’autant qu’Alceste n’est pas Les Indes Galantes, confier l’ouvrage de Gluck à un chorégraphe serait-ce le priver de son essence ? Alors, oubliez le spectacle et écoutez l’Alceste de Dorothea Röschmann, émouvante et ardente, pour elle il faudra connaitre cette représentation menée avec un sens dramatique certain par Antonello Manacorda, qui aura appris son Gluck à bonne école, celle de Marc Minkowski. Magnifique Admète de Charles Castronovo dont le ténor ample nous change des clairons qu’on y distribue trop souvent, sculptural Grand-Prêtre selon Michael Nagy dont le baryton mordant est idéal ici tout comme pour incarner Hercules. The Belgian dancer and choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui interprets Gluck’s late Baroque opera Alceste as an impressive symbiosis between dance and music. The opera “can be experienced here in all its existential power.“ (SZ) It is here performed in the revised Paris version from 1776 where Gluck has revalued especially the ballet music. Cherkaoui – director of the Royal Ballet of Flanders – has worked with top artists across disciplines like superstar Beyoncé.
