Soirée de gala à la philharmonie de Berlin les 22 et 23 octobre 2019. Pour fêter les vingt ans de « son » orchestre du West-Eastern Divan qui réunit des musiciens israéliens et arabes en un geste à portée autant politique que musicale, Barenboïm avait invité une affiche de stars : Anne-Sophie Mutter et Yo Yo Ma, lui-même dirigeant du piano le triple concerto de Beethoven. Le résultat ne manque certes pas de panache mais le chef pianiste peine d’autant plus à maintenir l’unité de l’ensemble que sa propre performance au clavier trahit le relâchement de son jeu, quant à ses deux compères, ils jouent plus en soliste chacun dans son coin qu’en trio. Une exécution qui réserve quelques beaux moments mais sonne bien bancale globalement. Barenboïm seul est plus à son aise dans la 9° de Bruckner, un compositeur qu’il a depuis toujours beaucoup aimé et servi (il est à ma connaissance le seul chef à avoir enregistré trois fois les neuf symphonies). Son interprétation est bien connue et l’orchestre malgré quelques faiblesses le suit avec une admiration non feinte (on reconnaît son propre fils Michael comme premier violon). La salle délire, on reconnaît au passage la chancelière Angela Merkel venue assister à un concert à dimension politique, bref une soirée de gala comme on en a connu avant qu’un satané virus mette fin à ces grands événements. The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra celebrates its 20th anniversary by giving a concert at the Berlin Philharmonie with world-renowned artists: Anne-Sophie Mutter and Yo-Yo Ma perform Beethoven’s Triple Concerto together with Maestro Barenboim and the young musicians. Yo-Yo Ma, who played with the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra at their first concert 20 years ago, and Anne-Sophie Mutter, who made her debut with the orchestra only this year, were named as honorary members of the orchestra on the occasion of this event. “It is fascinating to experience how brilliant, concentrated and at the same time relaxed these three world stars make music together and listen to each other. A masterpiece of harmony“ (RBB24). The second part of the concert features Bruckner's 9th Symphony, transcendental music which the composer himself dedicated to “the dear God“. The symphony is unfinished not only because Bruckner died during the process of composition, but especially because it seems to perish in nothingness. The musicians of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra are excellently prepared and play technically and tonal flawlessly. A magic moment.
