Voilà un premier enregistrement mondial qui s'imposait, et qui pourrait corriger nos préjugés sur le « Padre » Martini. De ce moine franciscain, on ne retient souvent que l'image d'un homme affable et cultivé, certes grand théoricien et historien de la musique, et grand pédagogue ayant instruit entre autres – excusez du peu – Jomelli, Johann Christian Bach, Mozart...On le considère comme un compositeur prolifique dans tous les domaines, mais on le joue peu – ou pas. Un maître du contrepoint élégant mais austère, peu inspiré et un peu ennuyeux. Mais écoutez seulement le poignant De Profundis qui ouvre cet album, et vous changerez d'avis. Tous les psaumes n'ont certes pas la même intensité, et le Requiem traine un peu. Mais la remarquable équipe des cinq solistes transcende cette musique. (Marc Galand)

The catalog of sacred vocal compositions by Padre Martini is vast. From the library of the International Museum of Music and the Diocesan Archdiocesan Archive of the Cathedral of San Pietro in Bologna, the orchestra of “San Pietro” has reconstructed one of the most moving liturgies for the Catholic liturgical year: the rite of the dead, which is proposed here in an accurate selection. To crown this work, an unusual (but not distant) psalm to the Office of the Dead: the De Profundis for solo baritone, filled with 4 voices and strings, representing the pinnacle of Martini’s compositional ability and complexity, both in instrumental and choral music.
