Capté en scène, mais plus souvent dans les studios de la Radio Bavaroise, George London n’est de toute façon que théâtre, magnifiant son français pour l’air de Dapertutto (ce Scintille diamant qu’on sait aujourd’hui ne plus être absolument de la plume d’Offenbach), revenant à l’allemand face à l’Antonia flamboyante de Teresa Stich-Randall, moment inouï, et qui ne sera pas le seul dans les scènes à deux. Magnifique la Tatiana de Valérie Back, chanteuse oubliée qui triomphe dans la grande confrontation de l’Acte IV d’Eugen Onéguine, proche de timbre d’Inge Borkh, et Astrid Varnay deux fois, Aida grand format dans la scène du Nil, et éternelle Brunhilde particulièrement étreignant ce 3 octobre 1953. Cela suffirait pour rendre l’album incontournable, mais écoutez aussi (en russe !) L’Aria du Prince Igor, si ample de mots dans ce timbre si noir qui rivalisait avec ceux des grands barytons soviétiques d’alors. Dommage qu’Orfeo n’ait pas ajouté quelques bribes de son Boris Godounov, face à ses adieux de Wotan, où derrière le feu de la voix transparait un avant-goût de cendre. Among those singers who, in the mid-20th century, stepped onto the opera stages of the world and into the shoes of the legendary generation of singers of the 30s and 40s, bass-baritone George London was an exception. His voice, with its inimitable and balanced timbre in all registers, was virtually peerless. London was a true bass-baritone whose voice, even in the extreme reaches, could maintain its dark tone thanks to a sensitive style and articulation and a wide-ranging expressive ability. His international career was brought to an abrupt and premature end in the 1960s. During an operation, one of his vocal cords was damaged and his voice never regained its force and beauty. While in Munich during a tour of Europe, London suffered a stroke from which he never fully recovered. He died in New York in 1985. This album of recordings from the Bavarian broadcast archive features the legendary bass-baritone at the height of his career in the 1950s.
