Sans pouvoir rivaliser avec le génie de son père, Franz Xaver Mozart s’avère être néanmoins un talentueux compositeur. Lui-même enfant prodige et excellent pianiste Franz Xaver est né seulement quatre mois avant la disparition de son illustre géniteur. Il construira néanmoins sa carrière en bénéficiant de la popularité paternelle, en se faisant appeler Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart fils. Sans être des premières au disque, ces enregistrements apportent un nouveau regard sur son œuvre, trop souvent cantonnée aux deux concertos pour piano. On découvre ici un compositeur inventif et sensible, capable d’élaborer des musiques proches de celles du jeune Beethoven, de Hummel ou Steibelt. Imprégné par la musique viennoise de son temps, ses mélodies élégantes rappellent celles de Weigl, Hüttenbrenner ou Schubert. Son Quatuor avec piano composé à seulement treize ans montre déjà tout son talent et son imagination fertile. Les sonates pour violon et piano déjà plus profondes conservent cette esthétique, renouvelant par leurs tournures le Classicisme viennois, sans toutefois s’immerger dans un style romantique à l’expressivité exacerbée. Par sa justesse de ton, la magnifique interprétation des musiciens rend entièrement justice à ces œuvres charmantes et tendres, oscillant entre deux courants musicaux. (Jean-Noël Regnier)

Born just months before his father’s early death, Franz Xaver Mozart represented the great hope of his mother, Constanze, who envisioned the continuation of the musical lineage in the younger of her two surviving sons. She, therefore, ensured that he received a first-class education, and he strove with all his might to prove himself worthy of the trust placed in him. He became a distinguished and recognized pianist, while over the years he created a small but refined body of work dominated by intimate ensembles ranging from lieder to chamber music. His character, as revealed through his compositions, is not unlike that of his father: behind the classically elegant and occasionally humorous language lies a quiet, touching melancholy, which in his piano quartet presses stormily into the world of the Romantics.
