Avec « Schön ist die Welt », Franz Lehár signe une œuvre majeure dans le genre de l’opérette. La partition exigeante devient même opéra dans le deuxième acte entièrement consacré à un brillant duo d’amour entre la princesse et son (faux) guide de montagne. Lehár précisera qu’il s’agissait « d’un fait unique dans l’opérette pouvant être considéré comme un acte d’audace sans précédent ». Présentée à Berlin le 3 décembre 1930 avec le duo réputé de l’époque Gitta Alpár et Richard Tauber, nous découvrons aujourd’hui cette opérette dans la version du festival Lehár de Bas Ischl où repose le compositeur autrichien. Tout y est à la mesure de cette œuvre séduisante ornée des standards de l’opérette avec valse et clins d’œil aux modes dansantes de l’époque (rumba et fox trot) dans une orchestration riche et colorée. Côté voix, Thomas Blondelle (Georg) et Sieglinde Feldhofer (Elisabeth) rayonnent pour donner vie à ce conte de fée alpestre tout comme l’ensemble de la distribution. Texte d’accompagnement en allemand et anglais sans livret, ce qui est fâcheux alors que de nombreux dialogues parsèment les trois actes de cette belle réalisation. (Gérard Martin)

In his later stage works, Franz Lehár replaced the happy ending usual for the genre with a bittersweet conclusion filled with painful doubts. In contrast, the ending of the operetta Schön ist die Welt, premiered in 1930, is unsurpassed in its clarity. Crown Prince Georg and Princess Elisabeth, who were arranged to be married by his father and her aunt respectively, do not want to go through with the arrangement, but end up together in a mountain hut without having met before. They fall in love and realise in the end that the world is quite beautiful after all. Lehár pulls out all the stops of his artistry in this piece. The modern dances and inextinguishable melodies are surprising and he again proves himself to be a master of skilful recycling by bringing the second act of a once dismal story to a new, brilliant life.
