Howard Griffiths arrive bientôt au bout de la première intégrale des neuf symphonies de Franz Krommer, puisqu'il ne lui manque plus désormais que la 8° pour que le cycle soit achevé. Les deux symphonies proposées sur ce CD datent respectivement de 1823 et de 1830, la dernière écrite peu avant la mort du compositeur. Cette 9° ne semble d'ailleurs ne jamais avoir été exécutée avant cet enregistrement. Toutes ces symphonies sont construites sur le même modèle et Krommer adopte invariablement la forme classique héritée du XVIII° siècle. Il est frappant de penser que cette 9° est postérieure à la mort de Beethoven et à celle de Schubert. Krommer ignore en effet complètement l'évolution ultime des deux grands génies dont il était l'aîné mais dont il se trouva être aussi par sa longévité le contemporain. Howard Griffiths insuffle à l'orchestre de Lugano (un orchestre "moderne" mais qui a adopté les techniques de jeu "historiquement informées") une énergie débordante et met en valeur les trouvailles sinon les bizarreries instrumentales dont Krommer était friand. Le très original premier mouvement de la 6° symphonie avec ses nombreux effets de timbales et ses modulations inusuelles est particulièrement révélateur à cet égard. Mais le rôle des solos de trompette dans la 9° vous étonnera tout autant. La découverte est donc aussi instructive pour ceux qui s’intéressent à l’histoire de la musique qu’heureuse pour ceux qui, tout simplement, aiment le premier romantisme, période faste qu’on n’a décidément pas fini d’explorer et dont Howard Griffiths devient au fil du temps le meilleur défenseur actuel. "In any event, a more convincing case for Krommer, who is also largely forgotten as a symphonist, than the case made with this performance culture could hardly be made". This is what Pizzicato wrote about the release of Vol. 2 of Krommer’s symphonies. Vol. 3 of this recording series completes the picture of this composer’s quest for harmonic innovations. Compared with his fifth symphony, Krommer’s sixth such work, composed two years later, has a musical language reflecting a process of radicalization. In formal and cyclical respects, however, he continues to adhere to the conventions of symphonic music of the early nineteenth century; not a single one of the four movements creates a revolutionary stir. Be this as it may, Krommer’s musical language ventures onto more rugged terrain; form and function are subject to a gradual process of dissociation. Krommer concluded the score of his ninth symphony on 17 September 1830, two months before his seventy-first birthday and only about four months prior to his death, which means that we may presume that it was one of his last compositions. After his death, however, his works no longer received attention; it is doubtful that this work was ever performed at all prior to its recording for the present CD. As in the sixth symphony before it, Krommer follows convention in his ninth symphony in formal matters while offering a whole arsenal of innovative ideas by fully exploiting tonal ambivalences, pursuing new compositional paths, and separating the architectonic and functional aspects of musical form. In addition, his use of a motif of fanfare character in the first and last movements heralds the development of a motivic-cyclical design transcending movement boundaries.
