Ce disque est un projet, c’est-à-dire la mise en cohérence d’une idée, d’un créateur et d’interprètes. L’idée, c’est un poème symphonique sur le volcan, ou plutôt sur la lave qui en jaillit et qui fascine tant le compositeur néerlandais Ernst Reijseger. Créateur et interprètes sont intimement liés dans cette exploration volcanique puisque l’œuvre a été écrite pour l’ensemble baroque espagnol "Forma Antiqva" et son chef Haroun – pardon Aaron – Zapico. Point de livret pour détailler les onze parties non sous-titrées mais une courte déclaration d’intention : tout comme "Les Quatre Saisons" et "Une Symphonie alpestre" ne sont pas des œuvres uniquement descriptives mais parlent aussi des phases de la vie humaine, "The Volcano Symphony" n’a pas pour seule ambition de décrire les sons produits par la lave en fusion mais de nous dire la mort, l’amour et la vie. Soit. On peut faire confiance à Reijseger, qui a déjà composé plusieurs musiques de films pour Werner Herzog, ce qui n’est pas rien, et à l’ensemble Forma Antiqva dont la réputation n’est plus à faire. Des instruments anciens pour de la musique contemporaine, voilà un mélange pyrotechnique ! (Yves Kerbiriou)

Composer and cellist Ernst Reijseger presents his first symphonic poem, “The Volcano Symphony”, written for the great Baroque orchestra Forma Antiqua conducted by Aarón Zapico. It is unlikel y that Antonio Vivaldi wished to describe the course of the year in his “Le Quattro Stagioni”, or that Richard Strauss had the intenti on of illustrat ing the mountain hike of his youth in “An Alpine Symphony”. Instead, both works focus on phases and narrations of human life. Ernst Reijseger is fascinated by the unstoppab le power of flowing lava, the inferno, the quiet sea of hell, the explosion of elemental forces, and the creation of new, vigorous life. In Inferno Part I to XI, Reijseger describes magma and its effects, this mass of molten rocks streaming out of the opening in the earth, breaking out, destroyin g, fertili sing, and introducin g the birth of new life. The Vulcano Symphony tells of death and life. Soprano Eugenia Boix embodies the voice of Pele, the goddess of the volcanoes according to Hawaiian belief. We experie nce a completel y new sound language from a Baroque orchestra: Reijseger' s composition transforms its fascinating powers of narration into an event.
