A la création zurichoise, ce fut surtout un succès d’estime. 1936, c’était trop tard pour l’Allemagne, et même si l’Anschluss n’interviendrait que deux ans plus tard, Kalman n’eut pas les honneurs du Staatsoper de Vienne, auquel l’œuvre était destiné. Compositeur juif, il dut s’exiler aux Etats-Unis. Chez les successeurs de Lehár, les intrigues historiques étaient à la mode. Nous sommes donc à la Cour de Napoléon. Marius Burkert dirige avec une science du rubato qui donne de la justesse stylistique et du caractère à sa direction. Distribution homogène et sans faiblesses. En Joséphine, Miriam Portmann phrase avec noblesse son « Schöne Marquise, arme Marquise », Vincent Schirrmacher campe un Bonaparte amoureux et lyrique. Son « Liebe singt ihr Zauberlied » exhale une nostalgie Mitelleuropa irrésistible. Mais l’écriture de cette œuvre charnière regarde déjà vers Broadway et la musique de film hollywoodien. Un monde s’efface au profit d’un autre. Soyons reconnaissants à CPO de documenter à un tel degré d’accomplissement un genre qui ne survit plus guère qu’à la Volksoper de Vienne et dans certains festivals. (Olivier Gutierrez)

Michael Lakner selected an absolute operetta rarity for a premiere during his last season as the director of the Lehár Festival in 2017: Kaiserin Josephine (Empress Josephine) by Emmerich Kálmán. His daughter Yvonne Kálmán had to flee to the United States with her Jewish father. In New York Emmerich Kálmán fought for a performance of his Josephine at the Metropolitan Opera and even found just the right female protagonist for this operetta. Her death in an accident also ended Kálmán’s hopes for its premiere at the Met because no other female vocalist wanted to support this work. It was thus that a masterpiece fell into oblivion. The conductor Marius Burkert has stated, »With its seriousness, depth, and melancholy, Kálmán’s music is something very special for me,« and we have him to thank for transforming this music into something very special for listening audiences.
