On aurait souhaité fêter les 40 ans du légendaire label munichois Orféo avec un coffret réunissant ces « ultimate recordings » (comme l'indique la pochette) plutôt que ce digest en mid-price et deux disques proposant des morceaux séparés de symphonies et sonates, totalement décontextualisés de leur source et de leur totalité. A cela, la notice n'apporte qu'un éclairage rapide sur l'historique du label et la liste des plages comportant le compositeur, le titre et l'interprète et la date (de 1951 à 2017). Voilà tout. Que du beau monde à l'affiche cependant : Klemperer, Sawallish, Furtwangler, Kubelik ou Kleiber mais écouter Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Wagner...etc dans un fragment d’œuvre n'apporte pas grand-chose à l'auditeur à moins qu'il soit dans sa voiture à contempler la route (Autant mettre la radio). Idem pour les deux minutes même pas que constitue le Prélude de la première Partita de Bach sous les doigts d'un pianiste rare, Carl Seeman, enregistrement de 1965 qui passe aussi vite qu'un espresso et laisse un goût amer, suit Oleg Maisenberg dans l'Andante de la 14ème sonate de Schubert (Plan-plan) et Saint-Saëns et son Cygne, joué ici par le duo Pergamenschikov/ Gillov. Un vrai brouet. On compensera notre déception par l'écoute de très discrètes pépites disséminées ça et là dans cette programmation indigne : le Debussy de Konstantin Lifschitz (Epigraphe antique n°1), Baiba Skride et sa sœur dans une Romance de Sibélius. et l'occasion dans le second disque de déguster ces « legendary voices » qui ont contribué au prestige du label : Popp, Lipovsek, Gruberova, Bumbry (Adrianna Lecouvreur), Baltsa (La Donna del Lago). Plus inattendues : Jessye Norman dans Alceste, et Brigitte Fassbaender dans Bizet (!), la formidable Krassimira Stoyanova chantant à la Lune (Ruzalka) et surtout le très beau duo "Lass für ihn" du Jessonda de Sphor divinement interprété par Julia Varady et Renate Behle. Un double album qui vaut le détour... à défaut du coffret. (Jérôme Angouillant)

When the Orfeo label was established in Munich 40 years ago, surely no one on the music scene back ten would have predicted that the record company would develop into a firmly established player in the classical music market. One of the label's main priorities in the early years was vocal music, with opera rarities top of the list, since the misd 1980s, the re-use of historic tape recordings. Big names featured on the label's own productions, while Orfeo also developed into a talent factory by discovering and nurturing young artists. This Legendary Conductors 10-CD box set marking ORFEO’s 40th anniversary presents a selection of outstanding recordings with legendary conductors in the true sense of the word. This ORFEO 40th Anniversary 2-CD sampler well reflects these two aspects of the label by combining highlight tracks of historical recordings with today’s global stars.
