Les œuvres enregistrées sur "Chattering Birds" font intervenir une (Leonie Klein – elle arrange elle-même deux des pièces) ou deux percussionnistes (Isao Nakamura rejoint alors son ancienne étudiante pour former le duo Isanie), instrumentistes bien plus souvent sollicités dans les musiques nouvelles, qui puisent volontiers dans des cultures exotiques, explorent le rythme et incorporent des éléments bruitistes. Le morceau titulaire, de Dai Fujikura (1977-), écrit pour le duo, tout en finesse et de délicatesse, succède à un moment énergique – "Latitudes #2", composé par la croate Sara Glojnaric (1991-) alors qu’elle prépare un triathlon, implique à la fois endurance et habileté virtuose. "Speaking Drums" de Peter Eötvös (1944-), qui fait intervenir la voix (des cris dénués de signification), est suivi de "Dialog Über Erde" de Vinko Globokar (1934-), tromboniste français d’origine slovène, dans lequel intervient, entre autres, un aquarium rempli de 80 litres d’eau – où sont agités, dedans et dehors, hochets et cloches. Pour les "Variations And Interludes" d’Ursula Mamlok (1923-2016), Leonie Klein réalise un arrangement pour percussionniste seule – la pièce, écrite à l’origine pour un quatuor de percussions, a des contraintes de préparation telles qu’elle est rarement jouée : elle y travaille les sons métalliques, leur résonance, leur déclin, avec des déplacements rapides, combinés à une surprenante légèreté de jeu. In Dai Fujikura's "Chattering Birds", the duogives an astonishing demonstration of how much music ispossible while radically reduced to finger cymbals. In UrsulaMamlok's "Variations and Interludes", again arranged forsolo by Leonie Klein, the form emerges between the groupsof instruments, and Hosokawa's "Windscapes" explores thecontrast between vertical accent beats and horizontalsweeping and scratching sounds. And finally, Uroš Rojko's"Ritem kože", after many changes of perspective,constitutes the aesthetically homogeneous virtuosoconclusion to this album.
