 Enfin Cui, qui l'eût cru ? Critique influent, ami du bien généreux Liszt, il fut du groupe des Cinq avec Moussorgski, Rimski-Korsakov, Borodin, aussi l'aîné Balakirev qui le marqua et l'initia à Glinka. Ils prétendaient fonder une musique russe (par la langue ou les thèmes), en réalité assez souvent d'un néoromantisme mou tendance centriste. On les appela par dérision "le puissant petit groupe", pour l'influence et l'autopromotion. Cui en fut paradoxalement le porte-parole et le plus influencé par la musique européenne. Disons du fané Mendelssohn : en art, on n'est jamais mieux servile que par soi-même. Hermétique à Wagner comme à Debussy, jusqu'à commettre drôlement au piano un Songe d'un faune après la lecture du journal (on dirait Satie relevant un passage pas trop mal vers midi moins le quart dans De l'aube à midi sur la Mer...). Ici, d'orchestrale, la Suite est une réduction de l'auteur, les Miniatures de l'opus 20 titillant un schumannisme universel intégré, celles de l'opus 39 existant en version violon-piano. Notre brave César, surtout russe de par son second prénom (Antonovitch), finit aveugle, faisant d'agréables joliesses tomber dans l'oreille d'un copiste pas assez sélectivement sourd. Aussi notre duo interprète ici, lui-même assez pépère, a-t-il du mal à nous captiver toujours au-delà de la valeur documentaire d'un compositeur qui respirait un air plus inspiré que lui-même. Mais basta, ça meuble entre ces trous qu'il ne faut plus dans l'éternité du silence, non ? Cui was a rare type, one of those universal prodigies who throughout his career combined seemingly irreconcilable talents as an artist and military academic. Cui’s life was shaped by an astonishingly unique outlook that was predisposed to an organic synthesis of various cultural traditions and styles. The composer was born in the city of Vilna (now Vilnius in Lithuania) César Cui spent much time writing music reviews: between 1864 and 1890, he wrote for a number of major Russian and foreign newspapers. As a critic he advocated the views of the Mighty Handful and, in doing so, propagated the innovative trends in the works of Borodin, Musorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakov. The concert pianists Maria Ivanova and Alexander Zagarinskiy were born in Moscow. They studied at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow and at the Berlin University of the Arts, the Mozarteum University of Salzburg and the Lübeck College of Music. They were taught by the likes of Sergei Dorensky, Victor Merzhanov, Evelinde Trenkner and Hans Leygraf. In 2004, the two pianists decided to team up as a piano duo. Since then, the duo’s concert schedule has just got busier and busier.
