 Carlo Rainaldi (Rome, 1611-Rome,1691) est surtout connu comme un des architectes qui, aux côtés du Bernin, de Pierre de Cortone, de Borromini donna à Rome son visage baroque. Abandonnant le style maniériste de son père architecte après la mort de celui-ci, il apposa sa propre marque sur ses édifices, son style héroïque, monumental, sa conception scénographique de l'urbanisme. Mais, dans l'esprit du siècle baroque, la musique est une géométrie traduite en sons, et on y entend les harmonies présentes dans la géométrie d'un édifice. Goethe dira plus tard : « L’architecture est une musique muette ». L'œuvre musicale de Rainaldi, redécouverte récemment, l’illustre à merveille. Ses cantates, duos, lamentations marquent une transition entre le maniérisme du madrigal et la cantate baroque. Ecrites à la demande pour un cercle restreint de mélomanes aristocrates, ses cantates sont restées à l'état de manuscrits, dispersés dans diverses bibliothèques italiennes, anglaises et américaines. Et c'est la première fois qu'elles sont éditées au disque grâce au musicologue, claviériste et chef Lorenzo Tozzi. Au XVIIème siècle, la cantate profane est une sorte d'opéra de poche, bref et ne requérant qu'un effectif réduit : une ou deux voix, un instrumentarium assurant la basse continue. Elle alterne airs et récitatifs. Les cantates de Rainaldi sont composées entre 1640 et 1670. Elles se caractérisent par un grand souci de l'adaptation de la musique au texte, dans la lignée du madrigal. Leur charme réside dans leur solide construction, leur architecture faite de symétrie, de répétition et de variation, mais animée d'une liberté métrique, de chromatismes, de dissonances expressives, de mélismes soulignant le sens du texte. Sur les librettistes, on sait peu de choses. Les thèmes, dans une veine néo-pétrarquiste, mais aussi pastorale, arcadienne, tournent autour des tourments de l'amour malheureux. Ces courtes pièces ont un très grand charme, et il est difficile de rester insensible aux accents pathétiques de la soprano Arianna Miceli, à sa voix fraîche et limpide, à son chant tout en finesse et subtilité. He was born in Rome, on 4 May 1611, to Girolama Verovio and Girolamo Rainaldi, a Roman architect, and received his education at the Collegio Romano, for music, and at the Sapienza, for architecture. He was active in all the major Roman constructions of that period, ranging from S. Agnese in Agone, in Piazza Navona, to the two twin churches of Piazza del Popolo, from S. Maria in Campitelli to the façade of S. Andrea della Valle, from S. Maria in Via to the apse of S. Maria Maggiore, not to mention Palazzo Salviati in the Corso, the loggia of Palazzo Borghese and the sepulchral monument to Clement ix in S. Maria Maggiore.We should also add to this list a number of chapels, sepulchral monuments, altars, triumphal arches and decorations for papal transits and processions. While as an architect Rainaldi has aroused the interest of art historians, he is not well-known yet as a musician. This third cd dedicated to the composer's chamber vocal production (see tc 611801 and tc 611802), edited by Lorenzo Tozzi at the helm of the RomaBarocca Ensemble, contributes to the necessary rediscovery of this aspect; the refined Roman cantata of the seventeenth century that sees its standard bearers in Giacomo Carissimi and Luigi Rossi, finds another and unexpected protagonist in the architect Rainaldi.
