 Les 29 morceaux du "Manuscrit Drexel" sont au cœur du répertoire des violistes de gambe. Dérivant d'improvisations écrites après coup, ils n'étaient peut-être pas destinés à la publication. Ce sont pourtant ces petites pièces qui font aujourd'hui, à juste titre, la célébrité de Carl Friedrich Abel. Les critiques éclairés de l’époque remarquaient combien cette musique était plus profonde que celle que le compositeur destinait au concert. La viole de gambe, dont Abel fut un des derniers virtuoses, est un instrument de l'intimité, de la sincérité, où les passions s'expriment avec pudeur. A écouter ces pièces si variées, on ne peut manquer d'évoquer Johann Sebastian Bach, le parrain et peut-être le professeur d'Abel, qui fut lui-même plus tard à Londres l'associé et néanmoins ami de Johann Christian Bach, avec qui il organisait des concerts à souscription. Le violiste polonais Krysztof Firlus nous offre une version intégrale de ce manuscrit, et on ne se lasse pas de l'entendre chanter ces pièces au rythme varié, tantôt gaies, tantôt rêveuses ou mélancoliques, toujours élégantes. Un régal. (Marc Galand) The album contains a compilation of works by a composer living in the times of the Bach family, forgotten for two centuries. His manuscripts, saved by the Drexel family – English philanthropists, culture lovers and artists – include both musically excellent and complex compositions. The richness of the dynamic and articulation contrasts sometimes brings to mind Mozart’s early symphonies, but sometimes it also takes the listener back to the world of sound solutions from before the Baroque era. The composer used the potential of the viola da gamba to the fullest. Krzysztof Firlus is a versatile musician, gambist and double bassist, a virtuoso working as a chamber musician with the best ensembles; he is also associated with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra. He plays a contemporary copy of the violone (provided with an additional seventh string) with an unusual virtuoso flair and a seductive musical narrative, thanks to which the compositions intended for a solo instrument seem to be played by a larger ensemble, and the music keeps the listener in suspense all the time.
