La transcription chez Bach? Parfois, le discours implique la sonorité d'un instrument particulier. Ailleurs, la tonalité d'une pièce pour violon solo est transposée à la quarte ou à la quinte, tandis qu'une autre sera indiquée pour luth ou clavecin. Quand rien n'est précisé (Art de la fugue), allons-y avec orgue, quatuor à cordes ou harpe (voire clavecin-luth pour la suite BMW 1006a). Bach n'a cessé de transcrire les autres (Vivaldi) et lui-même, recyclant de l'ancien matériau pour honorer la charge des commandes : pour le clavecin la suite BMW 1003, l'adagio de la BMW 1005, le prélude de la BWV 1006 pour orgue (à qui fut probablement destiné d'abord la fugue de la BMW 1005). Et cela, à une époque où se jouaient beaucoup au clavicorde les oeuvres pour violon solo. La fugue ici de la première sonate fut transcrite pour orgue; toute la deuxième sonate, et l'adagio de la troisième sonate, pour clavier; la troisième partita est aussi la quatrième suite pour luth; et l'on retrouve le prélude de la troisième partita dans les cantates BWV 29 et 120a. Bach a réécrit pour orgue ou luth des pièces comme la fugue de la sonate BWV 1001 ou la partita BWV 1006. Sans parler de la chaconne revisitée au piano par Busoni et par Brahms (lui, pour seule main gauche). Alors, justifier encore davantage cette transposition de ce monument pour violon solo en direction de la guitare? Magnifique, elle sonne physiquement plus ''résonante''. Tel adagio fait pavane élisabéthaine. Mais dans le rapide manque un peu parfois grandeur, attaque et mordant. (Gilles-Daniel Percet)

Why transcribe and perform the sonatas and partitas for solo violin on the guitar? It is surely the works themselves that provide the justification; their indestructible melodic poetry and their rich implied counterpoint at which the original violin can only hint. Many guitarists have already gone where more cautious spirits would fear to tread and made their own transcriptions; this new version carries the imprimatur of David Russell, one of the most internationally acclaimed guitarists of his generation, who writes that Francesco Teopini ‘plays with a beautiful sound, faithfully recorded. His interpretation shows a deep understanding of these major works.’ In a useful booklet-note, Teopini himself notes that these works are now standard repertoire for guitarists, even mandatory for the sake of personal development, as perhaps Bach is for every musician regardless of instrument. His arrangement is relatively discreet, adding just a few more bass notes to amplify chords in movements such as the famous Chaconne which is the climax of the cycle. Elsewhere he has borne in mind the art of the clavecin, which no less relevant to the guitar as an instrument of Bach’s time than the original violin. There is naturally greater opportunity for ornamentation, which Teopini takes with discretion. Italian by birth, Teopini himself is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London, currently resident as a teacher and performer in Hong Kong, with a repertoire ranging from Bach through the Classical Spanish repertoire to contemporary works, several of which he has commissioned and premiered by composers including GIan Carlo Mantovani and Fausto Romitelli.
