Dès l’imposant portique d’entrée du "Kommt ihr Töchter, helft mir klagen", vibrant et recueilli, Frieder Bernius s’emploie à nous faire partager son interprétation de la Passion selon Saint Matthieu de Bach avec son ensemble (Barockorchester et Kammerchor de Stuttgart). Les moyens sont là : un orchestre baroque qui sonne large, symphonique, un choeur imposant et des chanteurs aux voix claires et charnues. Un évangéliste presque autoritaire dans son rôle de narrateur sans pour autant déclamer (Tilman Lichdi), une vraie soprano au timbre charnel (Hanna Morrison), un Jésus réellement en souffrance (Christian Immler) jusque dans sa partie vocale. Chaque numéro relance le suivant avec la nécessité d’articuler l’histoire et d’en exprimer la trame dramatique. Tout cela témoigne d’un enregistrement soigneusement préparé, d’une lecture (historiquement informée) dûment réfléchie et d’un casting véritablement choisi. Cette nouvelle version ravive notre attachement à une œuvre trop souvent entendue (au disque) et parfois subie (en concert) faute d’une cohésion d’ensemble et de protagonistes à la hauteur. Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. Matthew Passion is one of the most important sacred works in the history of Western Music. It’s hard to believe that following Bach’s death it fell into oblivion until Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy initiated a veritable renaissance with his revival performance of the work by the Berliner Singakademie in 1829.
