Jascha Heifetz la révérait, lui confiant le poste de premier violon du RCA Symphony pour ses enregistrements, Hollywood l’accueillait dans ses studios où elle réglait les orchestres pour Waxman ou Rosza, et le soir elle filait dans les cabarets faire le bœuf au coté de Nat King Cole, de Sinatra, d’Ella Fitzgerald, une vraie américaine de la côte ouest, très belle fille dans sa jeunesse, et puis touchant à tout, y compris au Quatuor à cordes, primarius of course, avec son premier mari au violoncelle : l’American Art Quartet, que l’on peut entendre ici dans la reprise du microsillon RCA offrant une sélection de mouvements et d’œuvres brèves, surprend par son alacrité rythmique, ses lectures au laser (incroyable Sérénade italienne de Wolf !), mais aussi par son art évocateur : écoutez seulement La Oracion del Torero de Joaquin Turina. Biddulph exhume ce qui semble être le seul enregistrement d’un œuvre concertante que nous ait laissé Eudice : le 20 aout 1944 elle enregistrait le 5e Concerto de Mozart, destiné à être publié en microsillon pour les Boys des Forces Armées. Sonorité glorieuse, ton altier, phrasés conquérants, quel panache, quelle présence, tout d’une grande vraiment ! Et puis en coda, deux songs de Victor Young où son archet parle autant qu’il chante, merveilles tendres prises au cœur du répertoire d’Hollywood. Quelle artiste ! Although primarily remembered today as a distinguished teacher at the University of Southern California, where she remained for half a century, Eudice Shapiro was one of the most multifaceted violinists of the 20th century. She studied with Efrem Zimbalist at the Curtis Institute, and was the first violinist of the American Art Quartet. She was also the first female leader in the Hollywood studios, serving as concertmistress for both Paramount and RKO from the mid-1940s to the early 1960s. This release showcases Eudice Shapiro playing a Mozart Concerto (her only recording of a major concerto) and a variety of short pieces, including two popular songs by Victor Young: Je vous adore and Stella by Starlight. As demonstrated on this recording, not only was Shapiro comfortable performing in a variety of different musical genres from the classical concerto to popular show tunes, but she could also adapt her sound and playing style to suit each to perfection.
