Le label Acte Préalable dont l'objectif est de défendre la musique polonaise propose le premier volume des œuvres de Michalowski. Pianiste virtuose, grand défenseur du répertoire allemand (Bach et Beethoven) mais aussi de Chopin, il fut surtout un pédagogue très recherché. Il laisse 35 pièces pour piano d'un style très romantique. Tout ne se vaut pas dans ce corpus. Les pages inspirées de l'héritage chopinien montrent un compositeur maître des effets pianistiques: la redoutable Etude d'après le premier impromptu de Chopin dont les doubles notes lui ont valu l’admiration de Liszt ; les Mazurkas où le compositeur retrouve la filiation de son glorieux aîné, ou encore le bref Prélude op. 9. Les pages plus courtes, proches des pièces lyriques de Grieg sont moins personnelles. Mais la Romance op. 10, avec ses chromatismes avancés révèle un musicien à l'écoute de la modernité de son époque, notamment de Scriabine. Le pianiste et compositeur brésilien Artur Cimirro joue avec sérieux ce répertoire méconnu, bien que la prise de son qui étouffe un peu l’instrument ne le serve guère. (Thomas Herreng)

Born in Kamieniec Podolski, Aleksander Michalowski was first taught piano by his mother. Although the young Aleksander started to play piano when six years old, he became interested in being a pianist only when he was around ten years old, and in 1867 was accepted at the Leipzig Conservatoire as a student with Ignaz Moscheles and Theodor Coccius. During the same period he was also to study composition with Carl Reinecke. These three were to be a major influence during the formulative years of the young Michalowski. Moscheles was a piano virtuoso and friend of Beethoven; Coccius was pupil of Sigismond Thalberg and in Michalowski’s opinion, his best teacher; and Carl Reinecke was a pupil of Mendelssohn, Liszt and Robert Schumann. Michalowski finished his studies at the conservatory in 1869 and left to travel to Berlin where he was accepted in Carl Tausig’s classes within his School for Virtuosos. At this point Michalowski had in his repertoire all of Beethoven’s piano sonatas, the complete preludes and fugues from Bach’s Well Tempered Klavier, and a number of works by Schumann. Chopin, Moscheles, Liszt and Reinecke, amongst others. Michalowski used to study 10 hours daily during his youth, and throughout his life time he started each day playing Chopin’s Scherzo op. 39 just to ensure his technique was maintained at the same level of brilliance...
