David Starobin, guitare

Né en Bohème, le compositeur et guitariste Wenzeslaus Thomas Matiegka (1773-1830) suit des études de piano à Prague auprès de Josef Gelinek. Aidé d'un des mécènes de Beethoven, le Prince Kinsky, il s'établit dès 1800 à Vienne et débute une carrière de concertiste tout en enseignant le piano. Il compose et publie de la musique de chambre, des sérénades et une trentaine de pages pour guitare dont un recueil de douze Sonates. L’intérêt pour la guitare déclinant, il obtient le poste de Maître de Chapelle près de Leopoldstadt et compose de la musique religieuse jusqu'à sa mort. Ces six Sonates op. 31 possèdent une belle variété de formes et de tons. Elles sont écrites dans le même style que ses contemporains : Mauro Giuliani, Simon Molitor ou Anton Diabelli. On y trouve un respect prononcé du contrepoint et de la polyphonie, un amour de la mélodie et de la danse, une citation de Mozart (Sonata n° 5), des réminiscences du Sturm und Drang (Sonata n° 6), et des fantaisies galantes (Sonates n° 1 et 2). A l'écoute de son disque, le pianiste Ivan Moravec décrit ainsi le jeu du guitariste David Starobin : « An incredible variety of sound nuances, most vivid rythm and witty moments everywhere. Bridge Records is pleased to issue guitarist David Starobin's final studio recording, W.T. Matiegka's Six Sonatas, op. 31, performed on a Viennese style guitar. Starobin regards Matiegka's sonatas as "in their time, the pinnacle of expression on the guitar, offering the most detailed notation of both articulation and character--a clear window onto performance style in the era of Beethoven and Schubert." Since Starobin's retirement from the concert stage in 2018, the native New Yorker has kept a busy schedule, co-authoring with his wife Becky, the libretto of the opera The Thirteenth Child (music by Poul Ruders); writing and directing the film, String Trio, Los Angeles 1946 (filmed in Arnold Schoenberg's Los Angeles home); and serving as Director of Artists and Repertoire at Bridge Records. David Starobin teaches at the Manhattan School of Music and the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he co-founded Curtis's guitar program in 2011. A frequently honored figure, Starobin was called “arguably the most influential American classical guitarist of the 20th Century” (Soundboard), and was inducted into the Guitar Foundation of America's "Hall of Fame" in 2011.
