Veneration of Virgin Mary at the Polish Royal Court During the first half of the seventeenth century, when the Vasa kings ruled Poland, Polish music culture experienced a period of the greatest flourishing. International exchange meant that musicians there could produce a repertoire of the greatest stylistic variety, but unfortunately much of it has to be classified as a permanent loss today – because of the war waged against Sweden during 1655-60. What is extant, however, enriches our picture of the music culture of the old (and new!) Central Europe. The focus of this program is formed by works by the prominent composers Marcin Mielczewski, Mikolaj Zielenski, and Adam Jarzêbski: names nobody knows today. With selected compositions in honor of the Virgin Mary – even then Poland was known for its great popular piety – the Weser-Renaissance ensemble brings back to life the magnificent sound and multifacetedness of this great epoch.
