Ce Violoncello di Corelli est un instrument construit en 1685 par le luthier romain Simone Cimapane. Le grave et la taille de ce violoncelle si particuliers le rapproche de la violone (grande viole) et de la contrebasse. La famille Cimapane aurait fréquenté Corelli ce qui justifie le titre de l'album enregistré par Alessandro Palmieri qui replace le violoncelle dans son jus, à l'époque des contemporains du musicien : Domenico Gabrielli et Giovanni Battista Vitali. S'ajoutent ici les noms de Giuseppe Colombi, Giovannino Lorenzo Lulier et Pietro Giuseppe Gaetano Boni qui sont pour le mélomane de vraies découvertes. Anner Bylsma et plus récemment Elinor Frey avaient déjà consacré de très beaux disques à ce répertoire pour violoncelle au dix-septième siècle mais Alessandro Palmieri se singularise de ses pairs en dédiant explicitement son disque à son instrument. Une manière de déclarer sa flamme à son partenaire. S'ils sont tous deux complices de la majorité des pièces du programme, Palmieri partage les duos avec les claviers de Riccardo Doni ou le second violoncelle de Takashi Kaketa. Quant au timbre de ce violoncello di Corelli il est d'une rondeur et d'une chaleur aussi envoûtantes qu'un gri-gri africain. On admire aussi la vélocité et la motricité du jeu du maestro dans ce répertoire exigeant. Ajoutez la qualité de l'édition du label Passacaille et l'on tient un disque en tous points indispensable. Il violoncello di Corelli leads us to the origins of the solo cello literature – although one should actually use the term violone. In fact, the cello, as we know it today in its standard form, had many different sizes before its current proportions became generally established. Some instruments were larger, and the smaller ones were referred to by the diminutive form of the term violone – hence the word violoncello. And one of these early ‘bigger brothers’ is the main protagonist of this recording: the instrument played by Alessandro Palmeri was built by Simone Cimapane in Rome in 1685. It is a rare testimony to the original size of the violone. It is furthermore a unique instrument because it was used in ensembles in Rome in which Corelli himself played. Alessandro Palmeri presents a compilation of works from the early solo literature for cello by composers such as Domenico Gabrielli, Giuseppe Pietro Gaetano Boni, Giuseppe Colombi and Giovanni Battista Vitali. The extraordinarily prolific period, both artistically and musically, which prevailed in Emilia Romagna throughout the 17th century, provided the conditions for the creation and development of the cello literature. The works on this recording mark the transition from the epoch of the violone to the epoch of the violoncello. With them, the cello was ultimately freed from the continuo role to which it had previously been limited.
