Retour sous étiquette Urania d’une gravure Decca en son temps controversée. Un certain maniérisme a été reproché à Fischer-Dieskau, trop bien chantant, trop fin diseur paraît-il. Pour exprimer avec subtilité les tourments et les remords de Macbeth, mieux vaut un voyageur d’hiver que les barytons stentors qui réduisent le personnage à une brute épaisse manipulée par sa Lady. Le chanteur berlinois livre une interprétation plus shakespearienne que verdienne. On adore, tout en concevant que cela puisse dérouter. Trop tard pour Suliotis, en proie à de grandes difficultés techniques, qui l’empêchent de composer un personnage. Pavarotti, en jeune et belle voix, passe à côté de la souffrance de Macduff, non sans s’accorder quelques portamenti hors de propos. Ghiaurov délivre une véritable leçon de chant, profondeur du timbre, legato royal, et fait de son aria phrasé tout en retenue le sommet de cet album. L’orchestre londonien ne démérite pas, mais Gardelli malgré sa solide expérience de maestro verdien reste routinier. Abbado et Böhm, par exemple, chacun à leur manière, nous ouvriront d’autres abimes. A réserver aux fans de Fischer-Dieskau, qui complèteront par le live salzbourgeois qui le confronte à Grace Bumbry. In the vast, albeit late, discography of Macbeth (which began only in 1960 with the RCA edition conduced by Leinsdorf) the Decca production of 1970 stands out for its completeness, which foresees the restoration of all the scenes and the entire section of the Balletto, as Verdi conceived it for the Parisian version of 1867. No longer published by Decca for over 20 years, this beautiful version signed by one of the greatest Verdi conductors of the twentieth century, Lamberto Gardelli, has its greatest strength in interpretation, in the role of the protagonist, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, who deepened the character in an extraordinary way, often surpassing the greatest Italian interpreters of Macbeth (Taddei, Cappuccilli, Nucci). Not least the remarkable interpretation of Elena Suliotis, a dramatic soprano who in those years, and for a short time, played the most impervious roles of Italian melodrama. It is useless talk about Pavarotti and Ghiaurov, in those days at their peak. An irreplaceable edition.
