 De Schubert à Ligeti avec escales chez Gershwin, Britten, Berstein, Aperghis et le duo Pasek et Paul pour la comédie musicale, tel est le parcours contrasté qu’empruntent l’infatigable soprano Sarah Maria Sun, le clarinettiste Kilian Herold et le pianiste Jan Philip Schulze. Marqué « Le silence est d’or », ce programme traite, comme la comédie dramatique au cinéma, des sujets sérieux (amour, solitude, relation de couple, domination et mort) avec humour. Le festival vocal entrecoupé par la « Sonate pour clarinette et piano » de Bernstein passe du romantisme schubertien et de la délicatesse des « Trois chants d’après Attila Jozsef » de Ligeti au cabaret et à la comédie musicale avec les « Cabaret Songs » de Britten, « Trouble in Tahiti » de Bernstein, « Edges » de Pasek et Paul, « I don’t understand the poor » extrait de « A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder » et le duel éreintant chanteur/pianiste du « Rire physiologique » d’Aperghis sur un texte de Raymond Devos. En apothéose, Sarah Maria Sun se déchaîne dans les « Mysteries of the Macabre » de Ligeti où dominent les cris et les hurlements. Quelle artiste ! (Gérard Martin) The popular film genre and our recordings have something in common: ‘Silence is Golden’ contains tons of heavy content that is made easily digestible when it's transported through humour. Tragicomedy has always been a special genre: in ancient times, a satyr play followed the great tragedies, Shakespeare's dramas are interspersed with comic scenes, and Charlie Chaplin, Peter Sellars, and Ernst Lubitsch even alluded to the horror of the Nazis or the atomic bomb with the content of their comedies in The Great Dictator, Dr Strangelove, and To Be or Not to Be. Some find the laughing at this subject matter liberating; others consider it inappropriate and frivolous. We subscribe to the first group because we believe that humour allows us to look at serious issues from a distance, providing us with the opportunity to find possible solutions to problems. After all, they do say that ‘speech is silver'.
