 C’est à l’exacte moitié de sa longue vie, en 1629, que Schütz publia à Dresde ces "Sinfoniae Sacrae", ayant composé les premières à Venise en 1628 /29. Là, cet austère luthérien pour lequel le texte seul comptait, avait découvert grâce à Gabrieli et Monteverdi, la formidable influence des timbres instrumentaux et de la couleur des voix venant souligner les textes, émouvoir, toucher le cœur (la foi ?) de l’auditeur. Il s’agit de vingt pièces en latin, souvent couplées par deux et n’ayant pas de liens évidents. Le parti pris ici a été une classification par origine biblique, la plupart des textes étant issus des Psaumes et sept d’entre eux du Cantique des cantiques. Comme souvent chez Schütz, une voix unique, éventuellement féminine, a été confiée à deux ténors. L’interprétation présente est admirable d’esprit et de finesse, avec une mention spéciale pour la basse Harry van den Kamp. Voici donc la version "moderne" de ce recueil par cet excellent ensemble de Bremen qui est le Weser-Renaissance sous la direction de Manfred Cordes, qui nous fera presque oublier le "coup de poing" que nous assénaient il y a trente ans les Saqueboutiers de Toulouse et le couple Dietschy/Zaepfel. (Michel Lagrue) After a longer break we are happy finally to be able to continue our Schütz edition – repeatedly hailed as a benchmark series – with the WESER-RENAISSANCE Bremen under Manfred Cordes. Heinrich Schütz was surely the outstanding German musician of the seventeenth century. On its latest release the ensemble interprets the Symphoniae Sacrae I, the oldest printed collection of Schütz’s works. It involves works with obbligato early baroque instruments while also qualifying very much as solo music – with the external consequence that these works cannot be performed by a church choir and the internal consequence that their sung parts demonstrate vocal virtuosity both in singing technique and in expressive depth. Their essence can be captured only if the technical bases are fully and truly exhausted by the composer and the interpreters, who of course again, as on their other Schütz recordings, meet these demands: »In this interpretation one hears a vibrancy and a presence, music performed in space and with space, joy in sound, and a varied wealth of vocal and instrumental combinations.
