La firme polonaise Acte Préalable consacre, après une dizaine de livraisons presque exclusivement dévolues à sa musique de chambre, un premier CD aux mélodies de ce compositeur français aujourd’hui quelque peu oublié. Entreprise intéressante, d’autant que ces pièces sont loin d’être musicalement négligeables et qu’un copieux livret trilingue (mais dont le français est hélas parfois approximatif), accompagne la publication. Le texte des poèmes est même inclus dans son intégralité, ce qui n’arrive pas si souvent. Or, c’est là le maillon faible, si la mezzo possède des capacités vocales avérées, sa diction est telle que le recours aux textes se révèle constamment indispensable. On le regrette d’autant plus quand on apprend que l’artiste polonaise réside depuis plusieurs années en France où elle participe à l’activité musicale de divers ensembles. Puisque deux autres volumes de mélodies sont en préparation, retardés par le contexte sanitaire actuel, peut-être ce report pourrait-il être utilement mis à profit pour réduire ces imperfections, dans l’intérêt de tous, notamment du public francophone qui ne demande certainement qu’à poursuivre sa découverte d’un tel répertoire. It is not possible to discuss European piano chamber music of the romantic era without talking about musical lyric poetry. Already, from the time of Beethoven and Schubert, it accompanied the greatest representives of that time, often serving as a way to express one’s thoughts, feelings and opinions about current events, transmitted through the lyrics. It unveiled diverse stylistic currents – those shaped alongside the passage of time, and those slowly becoming obsolete. René de Boisdeffre’s works are quite the expressive example. Unfortunately, this French composer is nowadays completely forgotten and there is no information available about him in dictionaries and encyclopaedias. He was born in Vesoul, to a military family, and died in Vézelise. Already at the age of five he had left his natal town to move to the capital, which was, at the time, a cultural hub rapidly developing in Europe. He began his adventures with music by becoming a student of the Music Conservatory, established in 1795. At first, he developed his abilities under the guidance of Charles Wagner and Auguste Barbereau – a valued theoretician, known for his conservative beliefs. The latter especially had quite an influence on the works of young René. However, this period did not last long, as after being prompted by Camille Saint-Saëns, he abandoned his studies and took private lessons (probably with Saint-Saëns).
