Retour chez Urania dans un honnête restauration sonore de cette célèbre Flûte. Nous sommes en 1956 au Met, on chante en anglais pour faciliter aux mélomanes américains la compréhension des longs dialogues parlés. Après tout Schikaneder faisait du divertissement, pas de la littérature, et les musicals de Broadway peuvent être vus comme de lointains descendants du Singspiel de Mozart. Garant de l’esprit viennois dans cette production, Walter se tient éloigné de la sécheresse toscaninienne comme des lenteurs habitées mais hors de propos de Furtwängler. Tempos vifs, clarté des plans sonores, précision rythmique infaillible, ce Mozart svelte a du nerf, les baroqueux n’ont rien inventé. Le Tamino de Brian Sullivan est vaillant plutôt que lyrique, la Pamina de Lucine Amara n’oublie pas l’extrême jeunesse de Pamina, Theodor Uppman et Paul Franke sont impayables en Papageno et Monostatos, Jerome Hines, vieux routier du Met phrase la prière de Sarastro avec noblesse, et George London en orateur délivre une leçon de tenue et d’élégance. Les stridences de Roberta Peters en Reine de la Nuit la place un peu en retrait de cette distribution. Une version indispensable à tout mélomane. (Olivier Gutierrez)

After having recorded, from 1958 to 1961, a whole series of stereophonic recordings of great historical importance, in 1962, among other things, Bruno Walter intended to record two works: Die Zauberfl oete and Fidelio. Unfortunately the great director died that same year. In 1956, however, he had conducted a legendary performace at the Metropolitan of N.Y of Die Zauberfl oete. For an immediate understanding of the American public he had chosen to give the English version of Mozart’s last masterpiece. This version, excellently recorded by the MET technicians, has been published several times in very bad sound conditions. However, in recent times we have come into possession of a fi nally unaltered master that reproduces the original 1956 band: therefore, even being MONO, it is of excellent quality and perfectly reproduces both the orchestra conducted by Walter and the presence of the singers’ voices. Urania issues a new version minimally restored with the certainty of contributing to an increase in a discography that is still fundamental today.
