Martinu Lépopée De Gilgamesh Oratorio Crowe Staples Welton Martinik Honeck Vasiliek

En avril 1976, Jiri Belohlavek enregistrait pour Supraphon une version que je savais comme certainement définitive du chef d’œuvre radical de Martinu, son "Gilgamesh", mais il choisissait la traduction tchèque ouvragée avec une pointe de génie par Ferdinand Pujman, puisque son disque était d’abord destiné au marché national. Zdenek Kosler lui répondrait de Bratislava quasi un quart de siècle plus tard, avec une version plus lyrique, en tchèque également. Hors Martinu écrivit son oratorio sumérien en anglais, réfugié à Nice, et aura rien moins qu’Alvar Lidell pour récitant lors de la création londonienne dirigée avec ardeur par Sir Malcolm Sargent (la bande existe). L’œuvre fit sensation par sa roideur, ses cruautés sonores que Martinu avait déjà produites dans "Incantation", son sombre flamboiement, Jiri Belohlavek redonna l’œuvre à la BBC en 1995 (avec Jack Shephred), concert fugitivement édité en CD par la radio anglaise. Voici que Supraphon confie à Manfred Honeck l’enregistrement de la version originale, mais en la fixant à Prague, avec rien moins que la Philharmonie Tchèque (Belohlavek n’avait disposé que du Symphonique de Prague), dont la rumeur, le jeu percussif, les arrêtes glaçantes des accents magnifient le discours haletant qu’impose Manfred Honeck, qui tend l’arche dramatique de cet oratorio fulgurant. Sommet, la mort d’Enkidu, désespérant de violence et de noirceur. On tient enfin la réponse à la gravure princeps de Belohlavek, d’autant que le récitant n’est autre que Simon Callow qui fait tonner et méditer Gilgamesh de son sombre timbre tranchant. “I have realised that, notwithstanding the immense progress we have attained … the questions I have come across in the literature of a nation we refer to as primitive still accompany us. They are the questions of friendship, love and death. In the epic of Gilgamesh, we encounter a very acute and almost anxiously distressful yearning to find the answers, which we have been seeking in vain to the present day.” The music Martinu created during the last decade of his life demonstrates his penchant for religious and spiritual texts. The idea of setting the epic written 4,500 years ago matured in the composer for 15 years. Although differing boldly from the avant-garde of the 1950s, it is an utterly modern piece, reflecting Martinu’s intense interest in Baroque music and the Notre Dame school. The oratorio, premiered on 23 January 1958 in Basel, was a tremendous success. Its performance in Prague in January 2017 by the Czech Philharmonic and a superb international team of soloists, conducted by Manfred Honeck, brought back to life the work’s English version, based on Reginald Campbell Thompson’s translation. The recording, featuring a unique constellation of performers, renders the spiritually profound aspect of Bohuslav Martinu’s work with an exceptional emotionality.
