 Suite des captations de Jorge Bolet par la RIAS et logiquement tout un album Liszt dont les deux Concertos. Le grand appareil de fantaisie du Premier, joué sans afféteries, très tenu, très dit, avec toujours ce clavier si lumineux et portant si nourri, trouve un nouveau visage, sans plus rien de démonstratif. En 1971, trois ans avant le fameux récital au Carnegie Hall qui redorera sa légende, le pianiste cubain est au sommet de ses moyens, et résume ici le secret de son art : jouer en classique le répertoire le plus romantique. Lawrence Foster l’entend bien ainsi, qui surveille son orchestre. Résultat un splendide concerto-poème dont même le final est anobli. Onze ans plus tard, le Second Concerto est autrement moins radical : Bolet le joue large, tranquille, un peu atone, comme si il n’était plus vraiment incarné dans son clavier, contraste étrange avec la coda du disque qui nous ramène aux années 70, Sonnets de Pétrarque corsetés mais éloquents, Ouverture de Tannhäuser où pas une goutte de sueur ne perle, et qui incarne à plein dans le grand piano de Liszt la folie de Wagner, et surtout sa modernité, rappelant que même pour l’esbroufe de l’estrade, Liszt savait, derrière le virtuose rendre vivant le créateur. Documents majeurs en tous cas pour les prises des seventies… (Discophilia - Artalinna.com) (Jean-Charles Hoffelé) Volume 2 of the RIAS Jorge Bolet recordings is dedicated to Franz Liszt, whose works helped launch the Cuban-born pianist's career; it was also his Liszt performances that shaped Bolet's later path. Jorge Bolet shot to fame with the soundtrack of the Hollywood adaptation of the Liszt biography Song Without End. The RIAS recordings also show Bolet to be a Liszt authority. The piano concertos, conducted by Lawrence Foster and Edo de Waart, are concert recordings: the solo pieces were recorded in the studio. The concert paraphrase of the overture to Wagner's Tannhäuser, whose challenges are feared by most pianists, was one of Bolet's "war horses": few other twentieth century pianists would have come close to the technical and interpretational perfection with which he performed the work. The recording of the three Petrarch sonnets from the second volume of Liszt's Années de Pèlerinage reveal Bolet to be a master of beautiful sound production and legato playing. Bolet demonstrates an unerringly clear and perfectly shaped pianism, as well as his understanding of virtuosity: it is never employed for its own sake, but always to illustrate the musical context.
