En 1979, John Neumeier chorégraphiait un bref ballet sur Nijinsky à usage privé ; il clôturait dans une cérémonie intime le cycle consacré à Diaghilev présenté par l’Opéra de Hambourg. Patrick Dupont dansait NIjinsky, le ver était dans le fruit. Pourtant John Neumeier hésita longtemps, fasciné par le danseur légendaire, effrayé par la complexité de sa vie, mais finalement il réalisa une fresque étonnante en deux parties, grand flash back où le Danseur, se préparant pour sa dernière apparition publique le 19 janvier 1919 dans un palace de Saint-Moritz, revit quelques événements majeurs de sa vie. Une biographie de l’âme, le contraire d’un bio pic -voyez l’interview qui complète le ballet -, où se bousculent les personnages qu’il aura incarnés, de l’Esclave doré de la "Shéhérazade" de Rimski-Korsakov au Spectre de la Rose en passant par le Faune, mais où parait surtout Nijinksy lui-même dans toute l’inextinguible complexité de sa psyché. Le ballet est foisonnant, il aura fait grand bruit lors de sa création en 2000 et n’a rien perdu de sa puissance suggestive lors de cette captation qui saisit l’exceptionnelle reprise de 2017, où se marient une danse surexpressive et une narration spectaculaire : on regarde le ballet comme un film, suivant pas à pas l’incroyable incarnation d’Alexandre Riabko, Nijinsky idéalisé ou déchu, bouleversant, et entouré de danseurs acteurs stupéfiants. “Nijinsky“ is the title of this “choreographic approach“ to a dance phenomenon that has been part of Neumeier‘s life ever since the beginning of his career. During his approximately ten years as a dancer, Vaslav Nijinsky (1889-1950) set a new standard both technically and expressively, while in his choreographic work he pointed the way towards modern dance. All three aspects - the dancer, the choreographer and the person Nijinsky - form the starting point for John Neumeier‘s latest creation. Neumeier, who as early as 1979 presented a short ballet “Vaslav“, is regarded as one of the leading Nijinsky experts worldwide. Nevertheless, it was not without reluctance that he took up the task of honouring through dance a dance legend: “In creating a work about a historical person, what aspect should we concentrate on? Who was he truly: The man? The artist? Which witness, what information can we trust, which theories should one follow? What point of view can we take towards the complex puzzle Nijinsky? An instinctive choice must be made...“
