Jerzy Fitelberg Quatuors à cordes n 4 et 5 Fitelberg Quartet - AP0543

On l’oublie trop, Jerzy Fitellberg, resté dans les mémoires de certains mélomanes comme un chef d’orchestre dévoué à ses amis Karlowicz et Szymanowski, fut d’abord compositeur, et probablement le plus radical du groupe Jeune Pologne. Les deux quatuors réunis par le Quatuor Fitelberg sont deux balises posées d’un coté et de l’autre de la Second Guerre Mondiale. Le 4e écrit à Paris en 1936 est tout entier occupé par un vaste thème et variations d’une écriture âpre, revêche, où les cordes abrasent, ignorant toute mélodie. Fitelberg se voulait certainement à la pointe d’une modernité flirtant avec les méthodes de Schoenberg, sans en transcender jamais la rhétorique. Quasi dix années plus tard, le 5e écrit à New York durant l’exil américain procède des mêmes artefacts, s’adonne aussi dans son mouvement central au jeu formel un rien desséché du thème et variations, quelques harmonies populaires des Tatras l’éclairent tout de même, mais malgré l’engagement du jeune quatuor polonais, l’œuvre tire aussi à la ligne, rappelant que le meilleur de Fitelberg compositeur reste ses partitions d’orchestre, et d’abord ses deux symphonies. Jerzy Fitelberg was a Polish composer whose works remained forgotten after his death. He was the only child from Grzegorz Fitelberg’s first, unsuccessful marriage. For contemporary Poles, Jerzy was an artist who stood in the shadow of his father, an outstanding conductor and composer with great achievements in promoting Polish music. And what is really sad, even if at the beginning of the 21st century someone heard about Jerzy, it is usually only in this context. J. Fitelberg’s encyclopaedic biographies contain only a brief description of his work, mentioning his education and some of his most important achievements. Also in scientific works on Polish music of the 20th century, his figure is only mentioned among Poles active outside their homeland. It is Jerzy’s permanent emigration that seems to be the main reason for forgetting about his works in Poland. Moreover, after the Second World War, his music, like the works of other composers working on the other side of the Iron Curtain, met with disfavour and hostility on the part of the socialist authorities. What is most saddening is that in the 21st century his works still do not return to concert halls from this ‘ideological emigration’.
