Il fut l’un des grands pétrisseur d’ivoire, à l’égal des Rachmaninov, Busoni Friedman, Hofmann, virtuose absolu et qui ne voulut absolument pas l’être. Son professeur au Royal College of Music, Edward Dannreuther, qui étudia longuement à Leipzig auprès d’Ignaz Moscheles, lui dévoila l’œuvre de clavier de Bach telle qu’on ne la jouait plus alors : Busoni et quantité d’autres transcripteur moins doués, l’avait maquillée. A vingt-sept ans, Samuel joua les Variations Goldberg devant un public médusé. Longtemps, il porta seul avec Artur Schnabel, Wanda Landowska puis Claudio Arrau, la révolution Bach. Edwin Fischer suivrait. S’il ne put enregistrer les Goldberg, Victor et Columbia lui offrirent de miraculeuses sessions Bach reproduites ici. Elles forment le quasi intégralité de son legs phonographique, Fantaisie chromatique, Fantaisie en ut, trois Préludes et fugues du Clavier bien tempéré, les deux premières Partitas, un stupéfiant 5e Brandebourgeois pour la NBC et avec Isolde Menges la 3e Sonate pour violon. Au sommet, et signant son art fusant et si juste stylistiquement, une Deuxième Suite anglaise qui n’a pas pris une ride. Historique, mais tellement actuel ! Harold Samuel (1879–1937) was the first pianist to specialise in the performance of Bach’s original keyboard works in the concert hall and achieved worldwide acclaim in doing so. His pioneering HMV and Columbia recordings of the composer (all the Bach works included here, except for the first Prelude & Fugue from the Well-Tempered Clavier, were premiers on disc) sound as fresh and inspiring today as they did when new and reveal that great Bach playing is timeless. A unique live 5th Brandenburg Concerto from New York and a studio E major Violin Sonata with Isolde Menges round out his Bach and this landmark release also includes his remaining solo discs, notably some rare repertoire by Clementi and two of Bach’s sons which was recorded for the ambitious Columbia History of Music educational project. These new 2021 transfers by Seth Winner were made using the latest technology and present these historic documents in the best possible sound, revealing more detail of Samuel’s playing than has ever previously been captured.
